Picked mine up yesterday - further thoughts/impressions on the X1

Yesterday afternoon I picked my camera up from my local Leica store! I am truly thrilled with the purchase. I was going to try and buy a 2nd hand M 8.2, but they are still so pricey. And a new 24mm Elmarit to put on it would've been well out of my price range.

The X1 feels very well-built and its handling very intuitive. The autofocus, again, is about on par for a camera of this size - not the industry leader but not bad. In my opinion the AF is a small trade-off for all the advantages of the camera, esp the CMOS sensor.

I feel sorry for the people that wanted to buy this camera, but won't because of the bad press. I too would've liked the camera minus the shortcomings, but there will *always* be something better around the corner and the longer you wait the more pictures you will miss.

One of the guys in the store said that a firmware update is due later this month specifically aimed at speeding up the AF. As is well-known, this is primarily a hardware limitation and the update probably won't work miracles. Still, every bit helps. Hopefully they will extend the manual focus scale beyond 2m while they're at it.

On the X1 accessories:

The only bag I liked was the standard leather case, but only for traveling and storage. When out taking photos, I think a camera of this size should be around your neck or in a pocket. The ever-ready (never ready) case looks nice but is designed to work with the handgrip (more on which below).

The salesman considered the Vogtländer 35mm brightline finder to be better than the Leica one designed for the X1 (as well as half the price!). I ordered it this morning.

The handgrip: out of principle I am loathe to pay €100 for piece of moulded plastic. I tried shooting with it on and it doesn't really enable one-handed shooting - I have relatively large hands and the camera is too small for that. It also doesn't assist in keeping the right index finger off the aperture dial (which I actually found easier to do with the thing off - more space to maneuver one's right hand).

Hope that helps some of you!
