When reviewing my post, I saw the two "spots" on the body, but thought first my computer screen needed cleaning. Anyway, that's why I raised the question. No right or wrong here...just interesting diversity of thought. I do think the marks are noticeable, and I bet if the camera went for sale sometime down the road (when M9s weren't so scare), the "rating" would change and the value would be reduced. Bo_Lorentzen Posted March 1, 2010 Share #23 Posted March 1, 2010 Its annoying when you pull a new camera out of the box, but generally Im with noah_addis on this one... had my gray M9 since november and honestly those marks would dissapear on the camera today. then again, if you don't intend to wear the paint off the camera it may be a different issue and should be dealt with. . Ecaton Posted March 1, 2010 Author Share #24 Posted March 1, 2010 I just sent an e-mail to Leica NJ, suggesting that they confirm the "flaw" via e-mail and my right for free top plate replacement, at a date convenient to me, eg if the camera had to be sent to Leica for another reason, or if I decided the sell it somewhen down the road. earleygallery Posted March 1, 2010 Share #26 Posted March 1, 2010 Are you certain the marks are 'scratches' ? Have you tried rubbing them with a finger nail to see if they come off? This kind of thing is entirely personal - it would bug me if they were scratches and I'd return the camera. For example if you had a problem at a later date they might think that the camera had been dropped. I did get a new car with a scratch once, it was also annoying but I preferred to do a small repair myself than have the hassle of leaving the car with their paintshop for several days. Anyway a few days later someone smashed into the door mirror......I think the best thing to do with a new car is make a small scratch with the key on purpose, takes the anxiety away! Or is black the undercoating of the steel-gray paint? Perhaps your paint is marred but not scratched per se and the marks can be rubbed off? Dunno, just wondering. cheewai_m6 Posted March 1, 2010 Share #30 Posted March 1, 2010 i'd be annoyed as hell. i remember buying a motorbike jacket that had some dirt smudged on it and the shopkeeper said 'it's white, it's going to get dirty anyway'. that's not the point, you buy a brand new product, you expect a brand new product without blemish. however, in the case of the m9, i understand it could take ages before you see it again should you return it. i might let it go. but i might not. either way, i think there is nothing wrong with you demanding it to be fixed or replaced. How was the rest of the packing and packaging of the camera? It would bother me for sure but as another poster commented, my time is valuable and having to deal with replacing and waiting for another or losing time with the camera would annoy me more. Everything was in the original packaging, accessories still "factory sealed" in their plastic wraps. I don't think the camera got pre-used, not even at the dealer. At least they did on mine, so I figured they don't take off a used top plate, engrave it and reinstall it. They take a new one, engrave it and put that one instead. It's a 172 Euro operation or there about. But apart from that it's annoying, yes. My top plate wasn't replaced either - I watched it being done! Same top plate with the same marks afterwards. They're at a place that is very obvious, and a place that isn't going to see much wear. So they'll always be there bothering you. If the dealer can swing it, get him to exchange it from stock. Or argue for a discount on it. Otherwise, send it to Allendale. According to reports on the Forum, Leica is attempting to turn around all M9 repairs within two weeks--and apparently doing pretty well at it. An extra two to four weeks now without the camera is nothing to the length of time you'll be using it. So, I say, start out with a camera you're happy with.
