I'm left eye dominate and shoot left eyed, both cameras and firearms. When I first bought the M8 I decided to try using my right eye and the results were pretty uneven. I first thought that I might just need some time to adjust to rangefinder focusing even though I had used split image screens in Olympus and Canon bodies for 30+ years. Then one day a few weeks later, while testing a lens using a test target, I noticed that the rangefinder image would go in and out of focus if I moved my eye left and right behind the eyepiece. I then tried the same thing with my left eye and had no change in focus. I don't think that I would have ever noticed my "right eye shift" if I hadn't had the camera locked down on a tripod but, needless to say, I've gone back to left eye focusing. So what if I get a little nose grease on the LCD screen!

I think you'll find that is actually because most people are right handed and therefore right thumbed.

 

It does not follow that right handed people are always or necessarily right eyed.

 

All this "using the right eye to shoot with is the correct way" is complete nonsense, IMHO.

 

I'm right handed and left eyed and I couldn't care less what other people do.

 

You need to read what i Posted.

Of course the wind lever was put on the right side because most people are right handed, that is a given but the location of the finder window could have been anywhere on the camera, left side, center or right side. It was put on the left side for the reason I stated.

 

I don't find the quote " "using the right eye to shoot with is the correct way" anywhere in the previous Posts and I didn't make the statement so if you are attributing that statement to me, then you are incorrect.

 

The originator of this Thread asked what he thought was a "Stupid Question" but in fact is a very subtle and not that widely known reason for where the finder window is located and why many individuals have a problem with the eye they use and why if you are right handed and left eyed, the system was not designed for this condition.

That was not an attribution to you, but a general quote to counter the overal tenent on the discussion

I agree that using the winder is slightly easier if one uses the right eye, but when people are forcing themselves to use an un-natural eye just because someone tells them it's the "correct" way, seems a little ridiculous. It's like when Victotian teachers forced Left-handed pupils to write with their right hand under threat of the strap.

 

Each to his own, I say. Do whatever comes naturally.

Nothing wrong with shooting left eyed, but in some instances the trade off is reduced facility.

I don't use eyes to frame anymore.

I trained hard -and succeeded- after watching all them Holywood actors aka: Costner on bodyguard, Seagal, Uma Thurman on the avengers etc. etc.

But for this to succeed, you need to close both eyes and then use ears and overall perception

That is fascinating. When I first looked it was very strongly clockwise, and I couldn't "force" a change. Then I made myself think that the moving leg was in front of or behind the figure as it moved (say) from right to left in the image. Now I can switch at will. I guess the first impression is the one to go for.

The more I look at that, the stronger my impression that the figure alternates between clock and anticlockwise. If it's not a trick of who created the animation, should I worry about being schizophrenic?

Try reading the words under "left brain" and "right brain", then look at the figure. Or glance at the left side then the right side, and the figure spins one way then the other. Or maybe that's just me?

my left foot to wind the camera.

For the shutter release I prefer to

use my big toe on my right foot.

Cool experiment .... when starring at the figure, i found her turning clockwise and if i were to look somewhere else, i can see her turning anti-clockwise at the corner of my eyes
