damnsharp Posted March 1, 2010 Share #1 Â Posted March 1, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Goodmorning, Also my lens cap often fall off. I was thinking about a solution for it. In the early days with my Pentax I found the next solution: Imageshack - l1000108.jpg + Imageshack - l1000107.jpg but this is not right for the X1 because then it doesn't fit in the leather case. But what? Anyone an idea?

larbel Posted March 1, 2010 Share #2 Â Posted March 1, 2010 It's not really a problem for me, but I guess if you have too you can consider this. The lens cap unscrews open in the center, and since the edge's thickness is pretty thick, you can drill two small holes to the edge and hang a string there? Â Or if you don't want to drill into the lens cap, you can find some nice, maybe black leather texture surface type of tapes, cut to the thickness of the lens cap and tape along the whole edges of the cap. In the tape, punch two small holes for the strings? Won't be as secure tough.
damnsharp Posted March 1, 2010 Author Share #3 Â Posted March 1, 2010 Thanks larbel for thinking with me! (thumbs up) You have a few great ideas. I think the first one is in my opinion the best one. Maybe there are more solutions, so I will wait a day or so before deciding.
wda Posted March 1, 2010 Share #4 Â Posted March 1, 2010 Strange that, because only yesterday I was thinking how superior the lens cap attachment is compared with the flimsy plastic lens hood cap on my 35mm Summicron lens, a well-reported problem. The X1 cap has a far more positive attachment with a metal clip on both sides, provided you make sure it is fitted correctly in the first place. Certainly I cannot knock mine off the lens when fitted.
damnsharp Posted March 1, 2010 Author Share #5 Â Posted March 1, 2010 It's not so strange David when you have the X1 in the leather case and when you open the case, then the lens cap often falls off the camera. The opening is too tight.
jsrockit Posted March 1, 2010 Share #6 Â Posted March 1, 2010 My solution would be to not use the leather case.
wda Posted March 1, 2010 Share #7 Â Posted March 1, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) So we are back to the pros and cons of cases. I see your point; you have a nice new glove-fitting leather case and feel bound to use it. For that reason I am looking for a more open access case. I guess there is no perfect solution. earleygallery Posted March 1, 2010 Share #9 Â Posted March 1, 2010 If you're using the case maybe it's easier just to leave the lens cap behind?
pappde Posted March 1, 2010 Share #10  Posted March 1, 2010 I fixed up my X1 lens cap this PM. Took me 3minutes tops. 1. Use 0 phillips scd, remove single screw from center. Careful, screw is VERY tight. Lay down cap on firm surface, use strong pressure on scd. Avoid stripping the slot of the screw. (Then you will be really screwed) 2. Use 1mm drill bit to make a hole in the midline on the side of cap. 3. Pull a 15 cm long endless loop of a good quality cord in it. I used an older Leica lens cap lanyard for this. 4. Put bottom back. Make phillips screw really tight. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! damnsharp Posted March 2, 2010 Author Share #11  Posted March 2, 2010 @David, you are true! That's the point, the leather case is very nice but has a few disadvantages. Maybe I am still going to buy the ever ready case or the Luigi case but with the (very nice) Luigi case not the whole camera is protected.  @pappde: this is indeed a solution, I will try that  Oh and I thought about leaving the lens cap behind but I think the lens is better protected. It's strange that there is no UV filter for the lens, with my Nikon gear I had filters to protect the lens.  Anyway thanks for replies!
jsrockit Posted March 2, 2010 Share #12 Â Posted March 2, 2010 It's strange that there is no UV filter for the lens, with my Nikon gear I had filters to protect the lens. Â An extra piece of glass over your beautiful Leica lens... sacrilege. Seriously, unless you are in an environment that will harm your lens, you don't really need this. damnsharp Posted March 2, 2010 Author Share #13  Posted March 2, 2010 I am very attended but you'll never know. Indeed an extra glass is not so nice  Oh, pappde, the screw is indeed very tight. I still haven't got to unscrew it but I also don't have a right screwdriver for it. Still looking.
pappde Posted March 2, 2010 Share #14 Â Posted March 2, 2010 I went out this morning for a small photo excursion into town. I used my new lens cap arrangement. I have to tell you IMHO it looks very dorky, dangling around the camera, making clattering sounds. So eventually I took it off and pocketed it. That camera just looks so good without the cap! jpmac55 Posted March 2, 2010 Share #15 Â Posted March 2, 2010 The Leica Dlux4 has the lens cap string attachment and I didn't like it. The dangling cap was bothersome. I found someone on eBay that sold spare caps and ordered a couple just in case. I have the Leica leather case for it which is similar or identical to the X1 version and have not had a cap problem. damnsharp Posted March 3, 2010 Author Share #16 Â Posted March 3, 2010 Thanks for the replies. Indeed I also don't think it looks nice. Maybe I have to be more careful when opening the case.
