I have a 1963 Elmar 50/F2.8 collapsible and a 1958 Summicron 50/F2 DR (Dual Range) that I have not used a long time. I plan to start using them on my M8 body. I would appreciate it if any Leicanauts have used both lenses on their M8 and could offer some comments on the performance of these lenses with respect to sharpness, color renditions, vignetting, and the effect of UV/IR filter and coding, dos and don'ts, etc. Best if some actual shots could be attached for reference. Many thanks.

Hi Jaapv, one question - do you mean the DR lens cannot be mounted on the M8 or was it the ocular that came with the lens that cannot be used on the M8, or both. It seems I could mount the lens on the M8 body but not the ocular that enables close focusing.

The other lens that cannot be mounted on the M8/M9 is the Collapsible Elmar 9cm F4. One of my favorite lenses. Mine will just stay with the M3 kit.

The Type 1 5cm f2 Rigid Summicron has identical optics to the DR, and will mount on the M8.

Yup, I tried, and the DR lens refused to be even be inserted into the body, let alone turned to click, so it will just have to stay with my film Ms. The other Elmar 50 and Elmar 90/4 are fine with M8. Thanks.

RE. the 50 2.8, you have the lens, you have the camera, why not just try it out and make your own mind up?

Being a lower contrast lens than the latest ones it will be ideal for harsh light situations, and portraits. It's a tad soft wide open but much sharper by f4 - f11.
