markpsf Posted February 25, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 25, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I know there are other postings on this ...somewhere...but would love some quick up to date takes. The purpose...mostly candid shooting, occasional portraits, city and town scapes. Almost never at night. Like to be as low profile as possible. I can get the Summarit for $200-$300 less. Both used mint. Thanks. Mark

jaapv Posted February 25, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 25, 2010 At that price difference - go for the Summicron.
wlaidlaw Posted February 25, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 25, 2010 Mark, Can you "try before you buy". Last summer, I wanted to get an f2 50mm lens in anticipation of my M9. I bought two 50 11826 coded Summicrons. Both looked mint. The first one had a mal-aligned lens cell and was sharp on one side or the other but not both. Got a refund. Bought a second one and that had a weird focus fault. It was in focus at scale infinity, checked both with imaging and a collimator, albeit with a small but correctable RF cam error. However, as you focussed closer, the focus error increased dramatically. Theoretically this just should not be able to happen with a simple lens like a Summicron and again, my local lens man advised seeking a refund, which I did. I then bought a S/H Zeiss Planar 50/2, which is perfect, albeit with very high contrast - not so good when you want gentle transitions to shadows. Like all current ZM lenses, the focusing is silky smooth. Be warned! Wilson
BuenosDias Posted February 25, 2010 Share #4 Posted February 25, 2010 I used the Summarit M50 on my M8 and I was quite happy with it. Reasonable price, good results. Its compactness is an advantage, the lens hood it's biggest disadvantage. For me, I decided to swap my Summarit to a Summicron for the M9 for two reasons : 1. 1/2 extra stop in low light (which I really like) 2. get rid off the flare, which results from the fact that you never have your lens hood with you, if it is as unpractical as with the Summarit. My Summicron has a built-in hood. Unfortunately I can't compare them one on one, as I swapped M8+rit against M9+cron. Just my two cents.
