Elmarit 28mm Canadian any good???

I bought my first Leica today an M8.2 fully loaded.

And to go with it I bought a mint 1970's Elmarit made in Canada.

I've no personal knowledge of this lens. Seems Ok so far with the handful of jpegs I've shot.

Although, there is a slight green cast to some parts of the image. No big deal, just wondered what kind of lens I've bought?

You probably have the second version of the Elmarit 28 mm, which is a good lens, although its quality was superseded by the third and surely by the fourth versions. The green cast you mention may have more with software to do, or perhaps with the sensor? Since I am working on film only I can't say anything about it. But the 28 Elmarit can hardly be responsible for it, it's a good lens.

Do you have an IR filter? If you try to get an IR contaminated image neutral it is quite normal to shift into green. Nothing you can do about it when it happens really, except of course use your filter. You must get an 28 coded too to use it with success.

Apart from exif data, what are the other reasons for coding ?

The camera corrects the cyan drift that the IR filter produces in-camera, based on the lens type. It needs the coding for that. This holds true for all focal lengths up to 35 mm.

Hi,

the second version, '70 eve, work fine on M8.

Lenses above serial nr. 2411001 automatically bring up the 28 viewing frame. The lenses below that serial number don't bring up the 28 framelines but the 35/24.

Anyway, the contrast not too oppressive, the fine resolution from 2.8 and the 3D effect of the Mandler's designs will be surprise to you.

I too have the second generation 28mm Elmarit which I bought new in 1979. I had read posts that described the later lenses as better so I arranged for my local dealer to lend me the latest 28mm and did a series of comparison tests. It turned out that my old lens was slightly sharper overall than the new one at most apertures, though at 2.8 and 4 the new lens was much sharper in the corners. As I never shoot wide open, that was not an issue for me.

 

So in short, your lens should at least as good as a modern one.
