scjohn Posted February 23, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 23, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have 19x13 print capability but want to go larger with a raw file from the m9. It is a color image. Has anyone used any printers they (you) would like to recommend in the US?
Advertisement Posted February 23, 2010 Posted February 23, 2010 Hi scjohn, Take a look here m9 raw prints. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
sanyasi Posted February 23, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 23, 2010 I haven't printed M9 files yet, but I have been using the Epson Pro 4880 for the last six months. The results are excellent and I am able to go to 17 by 22. Nice solid paper feed. Many ways to load paper and color is very good. The one problem is that the thing is the size of a Volkswagen--a slight exaggeration, but only slight. I'd wait if I were you. They seem to run big discounts periodically. I think the one I bought listed for $1,900 and I got a $850 rebate. Keep in mind that you get the large ink cartridges, which is about $400 worth of consumables so you can view the printer as even cheaper if you want to think that way. The one problem is the first time you install the ink, about half of it gets used to prime the printer. Very easy to use and operate.
scjohn Posted February 23, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted February 23, 2010 sorry i wasn't clear. I am interested in finding a company that will make the print for me. My printer is big enough. I just want a particular image printed and I know some custom printers are good with Leica files.
250swb Posted February 23, 2010 Share #4 Posted February 23, 2010 You will need to convert your RAW/.dng to an aRGB or PhotoPro RGB .TIFF file first and do all your post processing. So in that sense commercial printers will be no better or worse using a Leica derived .TIFF file than any other cameras file. Commercial printers will not/should not work with your RAW file as they don't know how you want it to look. Steve
jaapv Posted February 23, 2010 Share #5 Posted February 23, 2010 I do know that master printers like David Adamson like to have both the finished file of the photographer and the untouched RAW.
scjohn Posted February 23, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted February 23, 2010 I do know that master printers like David Adamson like to have both the finished file of the photographer and the untouched RAW. Thanks! How would I contact David Adamson? The colors straight out of the color seemed perfect but my 19x13 prints came out a bit flat. Monitor calibration between printer and monitor has been/is a problem for me so I would prefer someone who can work from the raw file rather than my adjusted file (with tweaks designed for my monitor). sanyasi Posted February 23, 2010 Share #8 Posted February 23, 2010 I have forgotten the name of the place in Chicago, but know its location, but in any event I am sure you can find an equivalent place in LA. This print shop works with local artists on doing custom prints. You basically go to their shop, work with the master printer on the file, and then they print out a large size. I think it was in the 30 to 40 inches neighborhood. The cost was about $95 per print. As I said, I am sure there is someone in LA providing this sort of service. A Google search and a few phone calls should turn that person up.
noah_addis Posted February 23, 2010 Share #9 Posted February 23, 2010 I suspect most cities have good digital printmakers these days. In Philadelphia we have Silicon Gallery Silicon Gallery Fine Art Prints - Digital Printmakers. They do great work and will collaborate with you to get the look you want. Working with a local printmaker might make sense for you, so you can be an active part of the process and let the printmaker know what you're looking for. As far as calibration you might check out some of the hardware and software available. I've calibrated my monitor and made printer profiles for the papers I use with a Macbeth i1 system. My prints look damn close to my monitor, although I still do two-up 5x7 tests on 8.5x11 paper before printing a 17x22in print.
