BADGER REA Posted February 22, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 22, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I developed a acros 100 with Kodak Xtol and the scanned negs have a burnt/ solarised look. Is this due to inadequate fixing or washing or possibly some light entered when being loaded? This has affected all the negatives to one degree or another - very annoying. Thanks for any advice or comments. Jamie

wblynch Posted February 22, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 22, 2010 Using fresh chems and proper temperature? It looks like high temperature to me. (I had simliar results to this once and realized I was about 10*F too hot) Have you used this combination before?
Xmas Posted February 22, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 22, 2010 Hi Jamie It is desirable that you scan a (say five frame) length of the film including sprocket holes, as the rebates, allow more identification of any leak mechanism. Were any parts of the film a different color from normal? sorry Noel
BADGER REA Posted February 22, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted February 22, 2010 Thank you - yes I have used this combination before with good results The chemicals were at about 15ºC so I submerged the bottles in warmer (certainly not hot) water for 20 minutes until reaching 20ºc. Same with fixer and stop. I was dipping the thermometer in to be sure - I dont think it was temperature.

M5-User Posted February 22, 2010 Share #6 Posted February 22, 2010 Do the Negs look crazy, or is the scanned file that is not representative? I scanned a few XP2 negs, with a Plustek 7300 scanner, and paid no attention to the histogram and contrast setting "in the scanner" software. And I got similar results, but the negs are perfect looking. Just a thought for trouble shooting.
earleygallery Posted February 22, 2010 Share #7 Posted February 22, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Looks like a developer issue to me (assuming it's not a scanning fault). How sure are you about the developer? Mistakes happen.
Xmas Posted February 23, 2010 Share #8 Posted February 23, 2010 I'd second that, but the confirmation is how the rebate edge numbers look... Most times bad fixer or too short a time in fixer will leave a 'colored' sheen to the emulsion, so it is probably the dev. I always use Rodinal as the opened partially filled bottle shelf life is 25 years plus , i.e. if there is residue at the bottom of the bottle you are ok. Otherwise you need to be careful, like the dev was soft fruit, with a best before date... Avery labels on bottles... Noel
jsrockit Posted February 23, 2010 Share #9 Posted February 23, 2010 Is it possible the negs weren't in the spool correctly (i.e. touching each other) during developement?
Mab Posted February 23, 2010 Share #10 Posted February 23, 2010 Seems like a scanning problem to me.
tobey bilek Posted February 23, 2010 Share #11 Posted February 23, 2010 I think th film touched on the reel and some areas did not get developed. I give my ss reel a little push/pull on the film every few wraps. It is supposed to slide. If not, the film has skipped out of the groves. With plastic, you still get the slipage and you can feel the edges from the outside. Trim the leading edge corners so it goes on easily and keep photoflow away. If it was ever on, buy new reels.
