ArtZ Posted February 22, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 22, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi there! Has anyone tried them in the M8? Eye-Fi says they're compatible with the M8 and M9. Now, with the new 8Mb WiFi cards, I'm interested (if it works!) Leica Compatibility Table - Support
Advertisement Posted February 22, 2010 Posted February 22, 2010 Hi ArtZ, Take a look here Eye-Fi WiFi SD Cards. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted February 22, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 22, 2010 I have not tried them myself, but I understand that they have transmitting difficulties due to the metal camera body.
SJP Posted February 22, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 22, 2010 Their own blurb says: WiFi Transfer range is limitedThe wireless range of an Eye-Fi card inserted in the Leica M8 and Leica M9 models is generally limited to less than 15 feet (5 M) due to the metal plate that covers the bottom of the camera. When using an Eye-Fi Card in these models, keep the camera as close to the wireless router or computer (if using Ad Hoc) as possible to maximize performance. I think some people have tried this on the M8 but with little succes. You could try searching for the old thread(s). ArtZ Posted February 22, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted February 22, 2010 Thank for your comments. Yes, I saw the "known issue" with the M8/M9. Well, 5 meters is more than OK for me. As I keep my pictures in RAID 1 + 0 device on my home network, I can download the pictures directly to my SAN system. I was afraid that camera could blind the signal. I see two advantages: 1.- Downloading pictures will be faster: One step less because I don't need to downloaded to my computer first and then from my computer to the SAN device. 2.- Avoid eventual damage to the camera SD card reader for frequent use (mechanical). I will probably give a try

SJP Posted February 22, 2010 Share #6 Posted February 22, 2010 and 30 seconds for 10 MB transfer sounds like a whole barrel of fun if you use a 8 GB card. EDIT: need to read my own postings, one of the threads above is titled "Re: The Eye-Fi pro supports RAW file transfer" so jpeg only is not the primary concern

Jaap, As Stephen said the Eye-Fi Pro supports DNG files RAW formats uploaded by the Eye-Fi Pro Card - Support What upsets me more is data transfer rate. If I have to wait 30sec. for a 10Mb file... the interest is limited.

Bo_Lorentzen Posted February 23, 2010 Share #9 Posted February 23, 2010 Guess if it would work 5m that would be meaningful if only for transfering compressed jpgs for semi live review.. could be cool to recieve small jpg's while shooting, leave DNG's on the card if possible. . ArtZ Posted February 23, 2010 Author Share #10 Posted February 23, 2010 Well, yes, I can see that. Just try and upload a couple of hundred 37 Mb files... Eh, Jaap, I have two M8... no M9 for the moment... so no 37 Mb files but 10 Mb files. For me the major question is (real, no hypothetical) data transfert rate and battery life (if the camera runs the battery out downloading the pictures because data transfert is slow,I see little interest). I suppose the best thing it's to buy one and try.
Marty Posted February 23, 2010 Share #11 Posted February 23, 2010 What I had not yet confirmed in the other thread was the effect on battery life. Well it is not good Better get a spare if you are out for a while. All in all it is a nice piece of tech still a little bit ahead of its time. Mine is on the shelf...
