Hi,

ive received M9 last week. Well at first i was really happy, the advance is for me almost enough. But the almost is there, after few days ive put photo files to PC and got scared. Every photo had dark corners, sometimes symetrical, sometimes not. Its a 2/35 Summicron and ive teste more of these, but all do this. The 2/50 lens not.

I can understand this on some cheap camera, but not on a 5500€ Leica.

Do someone have any idea what is with it, on M8 and 8.2 wasnt this problem...

The demonstration files are here

Well im getting afraid ive some bad 35 or what? The camera doesnt do this even on 28 lens, at any setting. I have Made in Canada lens, but not sure if it will help :(

Sad to hear about your problem. Either you are using an improper lens hood or there is really something wrong with your lens.

Best

Hmm - even my 35 pre-ASPH Summilux was not that dark in the corners - at f/1.4!

Might try using the menu setting for the 35 'lux 11869 or some of the other 35mm settings in the menu, just to see what happens.

Also, just a reminder, that after scrolling to the lens setting you want, you do have to push "Set" to confirm it. Pushing the shutter button or the menu button will just exit the menu without actually setting anything.

________

BTW, on the M8 there was not this problem because all that vignetted area was cropped away!

You did remove the IR/UV-Cut filter, didn't you?

From what you say, the lens isn't coded, is it?

First, try turning lens ID off. See if that's worse. Shoot at f/2 and at f/8 to see how big the difference is.

Then, try settings for other lenses, Noctilux for example, and again try wide open and stopped down to f/8 or f/5.6.

1) As Luigi said, have you used it on film? If it worked on film and on M8, the lens should be fine.

2) The version IV is excellent, though my sample did vignette a bit on film. Version III also very good.

3) Can't tell anything from your first shot, of course; the second looks almost like mechanical vignetting, as if somehow your lenshood got switched. Try shooting without filter and without hood. (Version III uses Series VII filter held by hood, IIRC. Version IV has a rectangular hood that wouldn't cause this.)

4) That looks far more severe than one would expect from M9, so it's probably a missed setting somewhere.

Can you post a picture of the lens as you used it? Maybe it will help us figure it out.

Does anyone else have the 35/2 ver III or IV, who could post results for comparison?

how many filters are you using? if you have UV filter, and a polarizer on there, it will likely cause dark corners.

I actually thought the same thing, or your filter/hood is rather thick (long). Try taking a couple of test shots at different apertures, say from f/2 upto f/5.6... I mean I've seen this happen on my 35lux ASPH shot open wide at f1.4, but even then looks nothing like this serious!

Sorry, can't be more helpful!

i notice it's very cold from your charming pics..could condensation be a factor here?

is the lens dirty inside? shine a light through from the back at wide aperture and examine

did you apply a vignette in photoshop raw by accident? check your pp settings

as suggested, post a pic of your camera/lens/lens hood set up in case someone can spot something unusual

Do you use an older pre-asph Summicron, or a newer one?

Those of us who favor the older lenses have to accept quite a bit of vignetting at f2. Mine is the 8-element v. 1, & your post led me to check it on M9. I got these results (converted to correct middle gray WB in ACR):

First image: 35 Cron v1, milled & permanently coded as 35 pre-asph Cron; f2.

Second image: Same at f8. Vignetting greatly decreases when you stop down.

Third image: Same lens with camera mis-set to 'think' it's a 50mm pre-asph Summilux. This looks more like your images. Are you sure you re-set for the right lens?

(If you coded manually on M9 & also use User Presets, remember that you havechange ALL of the parameters when you save the next Preset. This could explain the camera's mistaking a 35 Cron for a 50 Lux or something else.)

If none-of-the-above, then Cheewai is right: this looks like too tall a filter stack, or a protruding hood.

PS, don't worry about swirls or smears on my sensor. I photographed a stucco wall & the blemishes are 'really there.')

Thx everyone,

ive tryed it again today, this vigneting is not on 2.8/28 and 2.8/24 , not even on 2/50 and 2.8/90 or on a macro 4/90.

And it definitely not a problem of setting right lens, it was of course setted to 2/35 preASPH and even on this setting there was no such a problems with 28 or 24.

These photos are with UV + Hood, but the same thing appears even without them.

Dont have the photo of lens, but im pretty sure its the same an Revdackj's -

2/35 Summicron-M IV Canada

I have two of them and they both do this, on M8, M7, M6 and M4 was no such a problem. Anyway i like these lenses very very much, they're my main and i just cant imagine taking photos without them :(

forgot to write that the corners are the same on F2 and for example on F5.6.

There are few photos where they are not, but its when there is not much light...

HI There

I know someone else has suggested it as well, but have you tried using one of the other lens settings - I might suggest the 28mm f2.8 asph - but you could just try going through all the lenses from 24-50mm and see if any of them improve the situation.
