anyone go from M7 to MP?

I've been through three M7s. Each of them failed with electronics problems.

 

The first was replaced by the dealer due to a seized shutter within a couple of weeks of purchase.

 

The replacement unit failed a few months later with a meter problem - it would only read 1600 ISO at all dial speeds, whether on DX or set manually, or whether there was film in the camera or not.

 

The third ran for about a year and seemed to working fine, but it recently developed the same problem as the second. On moment it was fine. The next the meter flashed 1600, and nothing seems to fix it. I've tried every 'solution' that's ever been documented, to no avail. It's gone for repair and when it returns I'll sell it, as I have no more confidence in it for anything important.

 

Frankly, you couldn't pay me to buy another M7. (Well, maybe I would if you paid me more than the purchase cost :-) By contrast, I have a rock-solid MP that's worked in all weathers, all temperatures, and has never failed me.

 

If I want a cutting-edge range-finder with fabulous viewfinder, highly accurate metering, and auto-exposure I'll buy a Zeiss Ikon. It also seems to be superior to the M7 in almost all dimensions, except the power of the badge. (The last point may be a contentious statement, especially made in this forum, but I invite anyone to read for themselves the technical specs, or refer to any of the numerous online reviews - some of which have been written by Leica owners).

Sorry about the M7(s) but I've heard tell some of the ZMs are comparable.

 

My new camera an M6 works perfectly, but I prefer the M3 and M2.

I'll buy into the "M"echanical "P"erfection nonsense in the continual MP vs. M7 debate - come the day the MP is built without that silly frameline selection lever! Really, if one is keen enough about photography to spend the kind of money needed for either bodies, wouldn't one know which lens is warranted?

 

Until then, I'll be happy with my .58 M7 and lever-free early M3...best solution for all!

Heres me thinking a user might be more concerned about weather sealing for the poor bastards tha dont just holiday in five star and guided landcruiser tours.

Since you seem to buy cameras that previously belonged to me let me know if you are interested in one of my MPs I'm selling... It's a black paint that is starting to brass beautifully.

I'm a bit late to this thread but when I entered Leicadom about three years ago the salesman at B+H tried to nudge me to the MP instead of the M7 I was interested. I bought the M7 and couldn't be happier - there have been zero issues of any kind and I have used it heavily, never babied. It's been dropped (in a case) and used in cold conditions, etc. The reason I wanted the M7 was the convenience of having it set the speed. If you want to go mechanical it will accommodate that as well. I know there is passion on both sides of the M7/MP issue but for me the question is settled.

I went from M7 to M8. After 1.5 year, I sold the M8 and bought a limited ed. MP.

I am glad I went back to film M. Much more timeless and "Leica M" than digital M. Yes, I did consider M9, however, the price and the feel brought me to MP. I love the MP - the best M in the world IMO.

I've used M6s and MPs since the mid-1990s, but recently picked up a demo M7 at a tremendous price. I'll probably use that a lot in the next year or so, especially for slides, and so far I really like the convenience of AP. I got into Leicas to get away from the electronics, having had a G2 fail in my hands right out of the box, so I'll probably keep at least one of the MPs I currently own.
