Water resistance and Soft Release?

The thing that I would worry about with the plastic bag and shower cap approach is that when you get a drop of water inside (and you will) the whole bag/cap turns into the ideal environment for a sauna. Hand heat will cause the water to evaporate and I'd have thought that was more likely to cause a problem that just letting the camera take a few raindrops in the open air.

If you don't like the crunchy sensation with a softy try to disaseble the shutter button and polish the parts with a nail buffer. I did that to my m8 button, which I later installed to my M9, and it feels much better. it is really easy if you have the right wrench, just unscrew the button assembly, remove the tiny screw and the thing falls into three pieces. the silver inner shaft need 30 minutes of polishing, put it together and there you go. it's not M3 smooth, but much better. I intend of migrating this button to any new M, as long as it fits. it shows some brassing and must have 40.000 or more clicks to it, but only 10.000 on the M9.

my m9 shutter is really crunchy (about the right word for it). i have it set to release at the first stop, which helps a bit. i am definitely interested in this procedure though--can you tell me what wrench you mean? i have read elsewhere that the whole shutter button assembly just unscrews (with your fingers), though i am kind of afraid to try it. also, is there any lubricant that will help with the crunchyness? tiny trace of vaseline maybe, or else a dry lubricating powder (maybe a horrible idea||)? or is lubricant verboten in this part?

one last question: can anyone tell me whether the water ingress vulnerability is just into the center, threaded hole in the silver button, or does it extend to the collar around the actual shutter button? i currently have a bit of nicely textured gaffer's tape over the inner (remote release) thread hole, so i suspect that won't be a problem in my case, but i'd like to know if the surrounding assembly is also known to be vulnerable--i've had camera's die before due to water, and i tend to be a bit cavalier about using the camera in rain, so it could be really helpful to know more.
