olik Posted February 20, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 20, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hey folks, I bought a used Leica R 2,8/19mm Elmarit-R but got a Leitz Elmarit instead. A reason to complain or is the Canada Version on the same quality level as the German Version? Thanks Oli
Advertisement Posted February 20, 2010 Posted February 20, 2010 Hi olik, Take a look here Leitz or Leica. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted February 20, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 20, 2010 There is absolutely no difference in quality between Canadian built lenses and Wetzlar ones. There may be a slight price difference due to legend-building and collectors' preferences.
earleygallery Posted February 20, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 20, 2010 Leitz = Leica = Leitz = Leica No difference, just use it.
adan Posted February 20, 2010 Share #4 Posted February 20, 2010 For this particular lens I would check very carefully to make sure you got what you paid for. There are two very different versions of the 19mm f/2.8, with very different prices. The original 19 f/2.8 dates from the 1970's, is very large (82mm filter size), and while quite good, is not at all the same lens as the version introduced in 1990, which is smaller, has a floating element, and built-in filters (diameter about 71mm). First version value around $1,000 US +/-. Second version value around $2,000 +/-. From forum member Thorsten Overgaard's site: leica.overgaard.dk - Thorsten Overgaard's Leica Pages - Leica 19m Elmarit-R f/2.8 version I and II sample photos The first version was made with both Leitz and Leica engravings, since it bridged the time period when Leica moved production back to Solms and changed the company name. "Leitz" prior to 1986, "Leica" thereafter. The second version was made only as a "Leica" lens.

I payed 850 Euro for it, but it is in a very good condition. Do you think I made an OK deal? thanks Oli
jaapv Posted February 20, 2010 Share #6 Posted February 20, 2010 Not too bad I would say. These lenses are not that easy to find. SH photo has a version 2 for 1399 Euro in AB condition, and that is too expensive.
adan Posted February 21, 2010 Share #7 Posted February 21, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Older Leica gear seems to retain more value in Euro(pe), so that price sounds OK. If the dollar wasn't such a shambles that would be a really good price over here, too. I just wanted to make sure you knew what you were getting. Personally, I like the vers. 1's drawing - much like my pre-ASPH 21 of the same optical era. Plus the V. 1 will clear the mirror on FF Canon DSLRs if you ever get the digital bug.
