To get the thread back on topic:

 

I think the statements that came out of Leica around the launch of the M9 which said that the M8 was a 'completed product' (or words to that effect - I don't remember the exact phrase), were really due to the excitement and euphoria surrounding the new camera at the time.

 

Having had time for some considered reflection, I believe they've sobered a little and realized that the long-term view is what their customers expect and value in Leica products.

 

I don't expect miracles, and I don't feel eternal upgrades are by any means a right, but as Angelos pointed-out, the M8 is still Leica's most popular digital camera, in the hands of thousands upon thousands of enthusiastic photographers out here, and the company would (imo) be foolish to turn its back on those loyal customers.

To do so would, as so many have pointed-out already, simply show future buyers that Leica sees its digital cameras as just as much a short-term proposition as all the other high-volume, low-cost producers.
