from .72 to .85

I know a few guys who have had this switch done. Some from .72x to .85x, others .72x to .58x. DAG does it, Sherry will do it, Kindermann will do it, too. I'd phone Leica directly for a price on VF.

I assume here you are talking about the modern MP VFs; the finder I just love for the 35-50-75 focal lengths is the .85x.

I think some of these VFs have been hard to come by for the indie techs. DAG used to collect pairs, like a .72x and a .85x then do a swap and just charge the respective owners for his time. Whether he still does this or not I don't know.

There are Leica and 3rd party eye piece adapters,... even if you only try them before you replace the finder.

Economically, it might be better to acquire another second hand 0.85 M7 and sell one or the other after verifying.

There is a price differential of usually 100,- EUR between the two, when looking at similar wear.

You also should have a serious look at the two different Leica magnifiers, as mentioned.

I use a 1.4 magnifier with my 0.72 M6 classic, which gives a glorious view with a 50mm lens. Be advised, that the meter display will not be within direct view with the 1.4 magnifier - you have to move your eye around. With the M6 classic, this is no issue, as only two metering LEDs are displayed and easily readable with the peripheral view.

A 1.25 magnifier could be very useful as well (I could not get one yet).

I would surely not go the rangefinder upgrade route, despite the camera being of personal value far more important than the costs for an upgrade.

I inquired just a cpl of weeks ago at Leica directly, it would cost about 800 Euro plus tax do have it done at Customer Service at Leica. As this was uneconomical for me I did not ask for a formal quote, but I don't think there was a lot of "wiggle" room.

I recently saw an auction of one of 500 pcs M6 classic 0.85 in mint condition.

The asking price was 1.800,- EUR - just 350,- EUR more, than I paid for my M7 0.85 a few months ago.

Leica can and will do the switch but as suggested, you would be better off purchasing a used 0.85 M7.

I would really compare the two side by side magnifications as the difference is not that much.

I use the 0.85 as I have no use for 28mm framelines and even having a 0.58 with a 21mm lens does me no good.

As for magnifiers, I don't use them because they get are just another thing to get in the way and i like my photography simple.

Personally, just use your 0.72 M7 and be happy! Its a great camera!-Dick

An shooter M3 is cheaper than that and the view finder wont flare the same.
