ho_co Posted February 16, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 16, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Whereas Leica has from time to time offered special-edition and commemorative cameras, variously honoring milestones in the company history (e.g. 50 years Leica, 40 years M, 50 years Midland); photographers (e.g. William Klein, Henri Cartier-Bresson); politically important individuals (e.g. Jesse Owens, Václav Havel, Martin Luther King, Jr); countries and regions (e.g. Brunei, the Benelux, Thailand); technical achievements (e.g. Øresundsbron, Jaguar XK 150, Steel Dragon 2000); and others; and Whereas under certain conditions the Leica M9 exhibits a tendency to produce in some images a reddened edge, usually the left and frequently also the bottom; and Whereas Communism is frequently denoted by the terms “Red” and “Left”; now Therefore let us recognize the M9 as a product created in homage to the universally fallen, failed or failing ideas of the red, the left, the Communist world-view. Thus seen, the M9 becomes: 1) a triumph of Capitalism; 2) an affordable and universally available Special Edition; and 3) a camera whose “Red-Left” tendencies Leica no longer need correct, since such a correction would eliminate the underlying symbolic value represented by the camera as it exists today.
