Definately not only Leica, I was equally 'surprised' when I found out the prices of spare batteries for Sony and Canon batteries for camcorders. The prices of some of those are even more outrageous. I guess not, so then the price is the same (or should be) as a Lada battery of the same power rating. The distiguishing feature of a Leica battery is that it is packaged by Leica and probably fits the camera you bought previously, also at inflated cost. The reason for the inflated cost is that the turnover is a lot lower than for something generic like a car battery, so the overhead costs are a lot higher. In addition they know that a 'normal' Leica customer does not really give a damn, unless the price is completely over the top. The price is ridiculous admittedly but the shop takes about 20 pounds, the distributor about 20 pounds, Leica about 30 pounds and for that Leica has to buy generic batteries, repackage them to their own standard, put into LEICA box etc. Maybe the ratio's are somewhat different but that is the normal picture. Small turnover => high price The EU commision is aiming for a generic mobile phone charger for the same reason. To avoid unnecesary costs. Will this help us? Well no actually, as they need the same amount of money by any means, so the markup on other related stuff will increase. This is the law of conservation of profit.
