Mac22 Posted February 12, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 12, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well, all geared up to pick up my D2 from a well known shop in the NW.UK. Arrived clutching my credit card and the owner was away on family business. His assistant took my "refurbed" camera out of the packaging, holding it for the first time and having a close look at it, it was not the mint bit of kit I had been enthusiastically told about. Full of scratches and the odd ding on the top edges of the case. Plus the charger was misplaced as the extra battery and strap....... Not happy at all, a belter had gone on Ebay for £100 less two days ago, boxed with a myriad of extras inc. the proper leather case... To top the lot going back to the car, after leaving the camera at the shop with a return visit booked for Wednesday, a £35 parking ticket....The parking attendant spotted me and scurried off around a corner. Very good move I thought.. See what transpires mid week..... Mac...
Advertisement Posted February 12, 2010 Posted February 12, 2010 Hi Mac22, Take a look here Disappointing Day.. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
AlbertoDeRoma Posted February 13, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 13, 2010 Sorry Mac, that sucks big time. It makes me feel grateful for craigslist - where my pro-active WTB (Want to Buy) ads worked out quite well for me - as did responding to posts. All transactions were local and I asked, and got, a chance to test the camera before putting down my money. Isn't there a craigslist equivalent where you are? Again, sorry to hear about that - I know how difficult it can be to wait ... and I can imagine how upsetting it is to be disappointed. Not to mention the parking ticket. Hang in there ... zenonzinonos Posted February 13, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 13, 2010 Sorry to hear about your disappointing day. There's a Digilux2 for sale in the 'Buy & Sell' section of the forum - not sure if it's still available as the listing was for 6 days at the end of January. Mac22 Posted February 13, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted February 13, 2010 Cheers Guys, I'll take a look at the Buy and Sell section. There's a couple on Fleabay as well. Had a play with the D2 in the shop, christ it's worlds apart from my D80...... You have to actually think when taking a shot..... Bit I LIKE it.... I will prevail unless it drives me mad first..... nigelb Posted February 13, 2010 Share #5 Posted February 13, 2010 That's a real bummer Mac, after the wait too. All the best on your continued search, there are a couple on fleabay at the moment. Since buying my D2 we have had a whirlwind romance, so much so I have bought her a dozen red roses for Valentines day tomorrow. It is an absolute minter - not a single mark on it, though I probably paid over the top for it, but I don't regret it. Its worth it just to see the look on people's faces when they ask how namy megapixels it is. Since buying the D2 I have also picked up an excellent condition Lumix L1 at a great price. Its a completely different camera, not so intuative or pleasant to use, but that Elmarit is one serious piece of glass on the front and the photo quality is great but somehow don't have the 'feel' of D2 photos. I am also very happy with this, but the D2 is the one I grab first. So having had two very pleasant transactions on fleabay, I'd say keep trying. One thing I did do was to ask the vendors if they could send me some high res pictures, both obliged, and from these I could better tell the condition, if the camera is clean and free from scratches chances are the owner has looked after it. Mac22 Posted February 14, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted February 14, 2010 Nigel. There is two on there at the mo. One with the sensor done and one with tons of goodies but no new sensor. Going to put a bid in anyway.... Off to get my deposit back me thinks on Monday... If the sensor goes it should be repaired gratis, should it not? I had a good play with the D2 in the shop and can't wait to have one for little old me....
nigelb Posted February 14, 2010 Share #7 Posted February 14, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Can't say whether Leica are still replacing sensors free, some say they are and one would hope so. The sensor in my D2 was replaced early 09. Just noticed an example of the Pana LC1 version just went for £333. You don't see many of these. Mac22 Posted February 17, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted February 17, 2010 Hi Guys, If all you D2 users had the choice over again, would you get a digilux 2 or a digilux 3. Is there any pros / cons with getting a D3 and visa versa. Regards Mark....
andybarton Posted February 17, 2010 Share #9 Posted February 17, 2010 The Digilux 3 has removable lenses, but was almost universally unloved, even when new. Leica had to virtually give them away to get rid of them. Note how many threads there are related to the two models here and you will be able to judge for yourself relative popularity. I doubt that many Digilux 2 owners would swap.
LKeithR Posted February 17, 2010 Share #10 Posted February 17, 2010 Hi Guys,If all you D2 users had the choice over again, would you get a digilux 2 or a digilux 3. Is there any pros / cons with getting a D3 and visa versa. Regards Mark.... I have both a D2 and LC-1 but have never had anything to do with the D3. From what I've read, however, they're quite different beasts: small sensor vs. M4/3, captive lens vs. interchangeable. D3s are always worth more money as well. I got my Panny LC-1 off our local Craigslist and actually bought the D2 thru eBay but both were local - within 30 miles - and I got to play with them before parting with my hard earned cash. I paid $750 CDN for each - which might be a touch high - but both were in excellent condition. There is, quite simply, no other camera out there which matches the Digilux 2 in overall charm, handling and image quality. Some of my camera friends with newer DSLRs ridicule my little D2 and I'll freely admit they're not for everybody. On the other hand, if you "bond" with the camera you'll become like the rest of us and never want to part with it. Mine are here for the duration and I constantly check Craigslist for new listings. I normally check once a day but a few weeks ago I slacked off a bit and didn't notice a 'good" one till after it was gone. D*mn thing was about 25 miles away and went for $450... nigelb Posted February 17, 2010 Share #11 Posted February 17, 2010 Hi Guys,If all you D2 users had the choice over again, would you get a digilux 2 or a digilux 3. Is there any pros / cons with getting a D3 and visa versa. Regards Mark.... Well, being so taken with the D2, I have hedged my bets and picked up a Lumix L1 as well. Much as I like the D2, I would occasionally miss the opportunity to go longer or wider than the 28-90 allows. The L1 is basically the same as the Digilux 3, but you can buy far cheaper at the moment - about half the price. Recent D3s have been going for nearly £1000, My L1 cost £450 - and it is worth that just for the lens. I can see why it was not a success when released, particularly for those looking for an upgrade on the D2. It is bigger, heavier and clunkier to use - altogether a different camera, but for me the benefit is the interchangeable 4/3 lenses. I have bought a 40-150 Zuiko which suits me for occasional forays into tele photography, and am now thinking of purchasing the 9-18 Zuiko to take care of those wider moments which will give me a good range taking into account the x2 crop. The L1/D3 is generally unloved but I do like using it, it gives super quality images and that 28-100 Elmarit is a superb lens, also with the bonus of IS. I certainly don't regret buying the L1. The downside is the pictures don't quite have the 'feel' (if you know what I mean) of the D2 pictures. In the future I can see me using the D2 for my street and general documentary photography and using the L1 for my cityscape/architecture/landscape photography. But as I said before the D2 is the one I normally grab. Nigel
drdannn Posted February 18, 2010 Share #12 Posted February 18, 2010 I also have both cameras. There's a place for each. When I'm looking for rapid response I will pick up the D3. I do have other 4/3 lenses that I also use on it ; for example, the 50-200. My choice for daily carry, and for that matter, pure joy, is the D2 hands down. I love the analog controls on both cameras. Made me 'think' again. Dan
Mac22 Posted February 18, 2010 Author Share #13 Posted February 18, 2010 Cheers Guys, It's a D2 for sure. Working away at the moment and managed to get online in the Premier Inn we are staying at. Looking through Fleabay, the D2 I went to see in the "Camera Shop" is listed. What is amusing is I have not had a call about my £100 deposit or if I am still having it... Going to try and ring him in the morning or maybe let the listing sell and then ask for my camera. Not very good business at all...... Anyhows, thanks for the opinions on the camera.... Regards Mac.....
nigelb Posted February 18, 2010 Share #14 Posted February 18, 2010 I see it. They say it is in Excellent +++ condition. Now somebody is telling a little fib aren't they!
Mac22 Posted February 19, 2010 Author Share #15 Posted February 19, 2010 Well then. I am a D2 owner and an original Leica D2 bag.... Should be with me early next week, can't wait... Please brace yourselves for the barrage of operating questions, and please have some patience......I apologize in advance... I've tried to read the online instructions but without the D2 in my hand I am finding it difficult. That's builders for you... Regards Mac....
