andym911 Posted February 11, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 11, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I went for it and took delivery last weekend...main reason was really because I wanted a small digital for taking everywhere, but also because the spec sounded like my dream of a digital CL! After some initial dissappointment in terms of speed (AF mainly) I have found it to be a tremendous performer....far above what I expected in terms of quality. In a nutshell the image quality is superb, stunning, and is up there with the M8, the JPEG'S being far better and the higher ISO in a different league. Sure it has a fixed lens and does not have the heft of an M but, together with an external VF it is a joy to use and makes a lightweight take everywhere package. After processing a few dozen RAW files and printing a few in A3 size I am just taken aback at what it can deliver. Just wanted to give a short experience of a week which started with dissappointment and is ending in elation....maybe it would suit some fellow M8 shooters as well. Best of both worlds maybe.....? cheers andy Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! andym911 Posted February 12, 2010 Author Share #3 Posted February 12, 2010 What a response... Guess it's not that interesting after all for fellow M8 shooters...Ahh well:rolleyes:
mhoersch Posted February 12, 2010 Share #4 Posted February 12, 2010 Please tell us that you did that kind of heavy 1930s look vignetting in PP! Otherwise, you might be grateful for not getting any responses here! Never mind my silly comment, enjoy your new purchase! How do you decide when to take the M8 and when the X1? andym911 Posted February 12, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted February 12, 2010 Sure it is PP ...even so any comments are fine related to the thread intent, i.e sharing an experience with a complimentary camera for the M8... As I am travelling a lot was just looking for that one camera to have at all times instead of the M8 which is a bit heavy and cumbersome sometimes... Am sure that once the novelty wears off I will use both pretty evenly as the quality is similar, for now though the X1 os obviously getting more 'air time' cheers andy
Maggie_O Posted February 14, 2010 Share #6 Posted February 14, 2010 How have you been dealing with the slow autofocus? Has that changed your style of shooting and choice of subjects from the M8?
andym911 Posted February 14, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted February 14, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Maggie...initially I felt the AF to be slow...but now I recognize that I still compose, focus and shoot at least as fast as with the M8 if not a bit quicker. So its not an issue for me. I only really shoot landscapes and people, mainly my family and friends, so to be honest I just use whatever camera I feel like at the time...don't really think about it.Never do street stuff so the MF does not come into play for me... Sure the fixed focal length has its limitations but is also a nice way of trying to master the 35mm focal length for all subjects:eek:...which I am a long way off achieving! its one hell of a lens tho'! andy
burkey Posted February 14, 2010 Share #8 Posted February 14, 2010 Andy - nice images. I like the treatment a lot. Have you had a chance to try it at ISO1250? I'm very curious how it holds up. Thanks for the post. . . . David
wilfredo Posted February 15, 2010 Share #9 Posted February 15, 2010 Andy, Can you post bigger files? These are really too small to be appreciated. Please post something bigger that you really like. You can go as big as 960 for this forum. You might also get a better response on the X1 forum. I think the mood around here is that this is an overpriced point and shoot. jsrockit Posted February 15, 2010 Share #10 Posted February 15, 2010 I, for one, truly think of the X1 as a back-up / compliment to my M8. I think it is truly short-sighted to think of the X1 as an over-priced P&S... it is completely capable for many types of photography and will give the user better IQ at higher ISOs than the M8. Ecaton Posted February 15, 2010 Share #13 Posted February 15, 2010 What a response... Guess it's not that interesting after all for fellow M8 shooters...Ahh well:rolleyes: Difficult to tell. You wanted to achieve a certain look with pp, nothing wrong with that, but it prevents from gaining an impression of the X1's qualities.
ldhrads Posted February 15, 2010 Share #14 Posted February 15, 2010 Andy, Thanks for the post, I've been holding my breath and waiting to see what folks think about this. I'd love to get one for my daughter to get her into real photography, rather than the arms length self portraits that teenagers do!! It'll be on the list. jsrockit Posted February 17, 2010 Share #15 Posted February 17, 2010 You don't have to look too hard to see what this camera will really produce. It is a winner in IQ and only gets dissed because the AF is slow for its price.
