Advertisement Posted February 11, 2010 Posted February 11, 2010 Hi minibus, Take a look here What would you choose the best len(s) for your M9. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
likalar Posted February 11, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 11, 2010 Either lens will be great and give rewarding results! Enjoy your new camera. Kung hay fat choi! Larry
JWW Posted February 11, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 11, 2010 I have the 28mm also but used that more when I had the M8. Although I like the 50mm 1.4 ASPH, with the M9 I use my 35mm summicron (V4) most of the time and my 75 lux if I need portraits.
lars_bergquist Posted February 11, 2010 Share #4 Posted February 11, 2010 The 28+50mm kit is excellent for 'combat in built-up areas', and that is definitely what Hong Kong is. Just add a handy 90mm lens, meaning a Summarit. Later, you may of course lust for a superwide. The old man from the Age of the 9cm Elmar
dpattinson Posted February 11, 2010 Share #5 Posted February 11, 2010 I think you have two of the best lenses for the M9 already. You might find that you like the 35mm focal length, but if I were you I would wait and use the two lenses you have for at least 3 months or so before you go looking for more
Steve Ash Posted February 11, 2010 Share #6 Posted February 11, 2010 Wait for the upcoming new 35 1.4. Regards Steve
jaapv Posted February 11, 2010 Share #7 Posted February 11, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I would not add a 35 to that set,Too close to bth 50 and 28. As Lars says, first a 90, then a 24 or 21.
Jeff S Posted February 11, 2010 Share #8 Posted February 11, 2010 Depends on your style and needs. I agree with post that says to wait, use what you have for a while and determine what's lacking. The M has the nice advantage of the frame line preview lever to see alternative FOVs. I own 28, 35 and 50...not too close since I use 28/50 for a two lens outfit, and the 35 alone if I want to travel lighter with just one lens. This, however, is a luxury, not a necessity. dickgrafixstop Posted February 22, 2010 Share #9 Posted February 22, 2010 Good advice....wait to see what you need next. If I had to guess, you'll add either a 75 or a 90. Either is a good choice and which one is more a budget question than a composition or image quality one. My favorite might be the 75 lux though the 90 cron is a close second. chris_tribble Posted February 23, 2010 Share #11 Posted February 23, 2010 28 / 50 + a 90 at sometime in the future makes a pretty good combination to cover most uses. I love the 90 cron. It's not much heavier than the 75, a more useful focal length for my style of work, and optically a thing of beauty Enjoy!
marknorton Posted February 23, 2010 Share #12 Posted February 23, 2010 I think the 50mm has come into its own on the M9 where on the M8 it can be a bit long, so I am re-discovering the lights of the 50/1.4 ASPH. I think 28/50/90 is a good way to go and I agree with Chris about the 90mm Summicron, startlingly good colour.
chris_tribble Posted February 23, 2010 Share #13 Posted February 23, 2010 I think the 50mm has come into its own on the M9 where on the M8 it can be a bit long, so I am re-discovering the lights of the 50/1.4 ASPH. I think 28/50/90 is a good way to go and I agree with Chris about the 90mm Summicron, startlingly good colour. Mutual agreement all round. THE reason for getting the M9 has been the performance of the 28 cron asph and 50 lux asph. IMHO there's simply nothing to beat them at these focal lengths. jonoslack Posted February 23, 2010 Share #14 Posted February 23, 2010 FWIW I quite agree - these are THE lenses on the M9. Next you need a longer lens and then a wider. I'm finding myself using the 75 summicron a great deal - it's smaller than the 90, and similar in character to the 50 'lux. It also focuses closer than the 90. On the other hand, if you're on a budget, the 90 summarit is excellent, as is the last model 90 elmarit (with the sliding hood).
250swb Posted February 23, 2010 Share #15 Posted February 23, 2010 A secondhand 90mm Elmarit must be the biggest 'bang for buck' possible in M lenses, and it would be an ideal partner to the 28 and 50. Its the three focal lengths I would most often pack a bag with. Steve
Mauribix Posted February 23, 2010 Share #16 Posted February 23, 2010 I'm finding myself using the 75 summicron a great deal - it's smaller than the 90, and similar in character to the 50 'lux. It also focuses closer than the 90 Jonathan, you hit the point! The biggest advantage of the 75cron over the others (75summarit, 75lux, 90cron, 90 summarit and 90 elmarit) is its performance at the closest focus distance and the 0.7 vs 0.9 or 1m range. Add that to its "50lux ASPH look"...
Frank Sprow Posted February 23, 2010 Share #17 Posted February 23, 2010 When I've looked over my best "M" photos over 30+ years, those that had the most impact were with a 50mm -- recognizing that much of my work is "people oriented". I've had several, but the current Summilux Aspheric is the best. I also have and like the 75mm Summicron Aspheric very much. It and the 50 are my best resolving lenses and have great color rendition on both the M9 and my trusty M7. I have a couple of 28mm's, great for pix in crowds. I have wanted to like the "skinny" 90mm Elmarit three times! I probably had bad examples but experienced everything from poor resolution and element "fogging". I tried larger 90's but found I never took them out of the bag. Just another opinion. Obviously what produces the best images in your work is best. Wish I had been in China this year for New Years. Was in Sian with a UK crew photographing the terra cotta work several years ago at New Years and it was lots of fun, but very cold there.
