@ Jeff S: You don't say so specifically, but I guess you are asking for a wind lever? The motor already is "mechanical" in that it turns gears and levers to move the shutter back to ready position. A thumb-powered wind lever would be just a different kind of mechanical, turning similar gears (maybe more quietly).

....More speed = more sound. Consider a bicycle compared to a Formula One car).

.

Yes, Andy, sorry I got lazy after my first post (#3), where I specified the manual wind lever cocking. Which, by the way, relates to your bicycle and Formula One analogy...not just speed...the former has no motor.

Thanks for the detail of your post, with illustration. I knew the basic issues...size and space...but haven't checked back to Mark's camera dissection in a while.

FWIW, I love the M experience, still, even in a digital world. My photos aren't limited by the camera...just by me. This is just a personal peeve, given my love of film Ms and their quiet nature, in addition to their size and portability, etc. Leica did a great job introducing the digital M in the first place. But, I continue to dream.:D

Actually, looking at the image of the M8 shutter, it occurs to me that a Leicavit-type bottom wind "trigger" could connect almost directly to that cocking arm very nicely,...

Since there is so much concern about "cloaking" these theft-prone cameras, the Leicavit device would serve for self-defense. :)

Just to clarify...my issue is not the sound of the shutter release, but the sound of the motor that recocks the shutter. So, why couldn't this be mechanical...and just as "silent" as the film Ms? Yes, this might change other internal things due to size, etc...and may not be something that most people even want...but why isn't it possible technically?

Because Leica would need to calibrate everybody's finger and thumb so the 'C' setting could be reliably used. What chaos there would be if one persons responses were 5 fps and anothers 10fps! I suppose the other way to look at it would be to accept that Leica have to make some advance in technology at some time with some camera or other, even if that inconveniences die hard film users.

 I think the other responses following my post are more to the point.

Oh, and if I apply more pressure to the shutter at 1/500, will it shoot at 1/1000?
