When you buy an X1, you not only get a camera ... you get a chest of drawers as well!

My X1 just arrived and the packaging and boxing is the most thorough I've ever seen. There's an outer thinnish box inside which is an 'origami' type collapsable box, and then the cardboard bureau/chest of drawers. There are 3 instruction manuals each covering several languages and together they take up the bottom drawer. The top drawer houses the charger with various modular plugs, the battery and the camera strap. The top of the bureau houses the actual usual top quality Leica camera box. The front cover of the cardboard bureau is magnetic thus when it's folded back to cover the drawers there is a nice 'clunk' as it closes onto the front. When I first 'opened the box', pulled down the bureau front cover and opened the drawers I thought the software was missing but after reading the instruction manual (briefly) discovered that the LIghtroom software has to be downloaded after registering the camera.

I'm a bit overwhelmed by the packaging. It's a good job the camera appears to be fairly simple to use because I would not wish to hump the instruction manual around with me -

the manual weighs 350g and is in four languages including English.

Battery is on charge and looking forward to using the camera soon.

I'm not bothered about all the negative comments regarding slowness of use. Initially will using zone focusing and a good old SBLOO

Not sure if will be buying the grip and I think the camera will be ok used with a wrist strap rather than a neck strap.

Cheers

Predictable...

...and all wearing a bit thin now.

Enjoy your camera dunk, and be sure to let us know your comments as well as posting a few pictures. I would get an X1 and like you I can see past all the sarcky comments, but financially i'm stuck with my D-Lux4 and D2 at the moment - but that's no problem as I am enjoying using them so much.

Congrats dunk :) I just received my dealers call it´s ready for being picked up. Too bad I am on a business trip until thursday.

Would the haters please stop their annoying comments about something that they have never even held in their hands? Thanks . You see, we know your opinion know and all this bashing it´s really starting to get ridiculous.

A camera, with a true Leica-lens producing this fantastic IQ in such a small body with this outstanding ISO-performance for $2.000 is nothing but a bargain.

Could you tell me more about why that you bought that viewfinder? Advantages? Where did you get it?

Thanks

Joan

I've had the vintage viewfinder for many years .. before they became very popular with 'overseas collectors' and thus became rather scarce and expensive. It's a standard and well known Leica accessory. If you can get hold of a copy of this well known Leica book

Leica M Compendium: Handbook of the ... - Google Books ... it will tell you all about Leica accessory viewfinders and particularly sings praises about the 35mm finder.

I'm using it because the X1 does not have a conventional viewfinder and I do not wish to rely on the monitor ie don't wish to hold the camera like a book.

The viewfinders can be purchased from most Leica dealers .. this is a vintage model but I think there are more modern equivalents and other similar non-Leica viewfinders are also available.

Cheers
