Dead M9

Lucky Leica. They've got the most tolerant customers in the world.

Maybe, but I think it is that we 'pick our fights.'

Canikon may 'work' but be unsatisfying in IQ or whatever some find as the quality edge Laica (and Zeiss) have.

On 'dead' cameras... rarely really dead. with DMR, M8 and now m9 it does seem to be FW.. SOMETHING (a shot with cap on where it was interrupted mid darkfield fix), or a poor contact, even a lens not quite seated and the ever popular 'weak battery'

In ALL my dead experiences, jiggling something and reseating battery worked (ok, maybe LOTS of jiggling :-)

FW seems to be a weak point, the I get images like this (please, no aesthetic comment) right out, jpgs (yes, I have raw also) just reduced for posting. Great color, DR and depth.

This is what I expect, and get from Leica...(usually :-)

Lucky Leica. They've got the most tolerant customers in the world.

They really have, I am amazed every time I see another problem with the M9, how everybody defend Leica.

I am still about to order and if I understand well then I have to check first the website which card to use, other wise the camera may not work, I have to check how to put it in, since it does fit both ways, but the wrong way could damage the card. I should not use the cable to transfer my files, but open up

the bottom everytime, take the card out and use a card reader, I should keep it warm during these colder days, otherwise the camera 'freezes', I might expect dust on the sensor from time to time, even if I do not swob lenses and I might expect that the camera may have to be returned to Leica to fix the rangefinder problem and then it should work properly, right?

I fully, really fully understand that many of us do not mind to baby their M9 a bit and treat their camera like a vintage MG and I do not fear a little problem either, but is'nt this not a bit too much, that we find absolutely acceptabe?

No camera in any lower price category has such a list of points to think about.

Am I wrong?

I have sold my RD-1 to upgrade to the M9, but I still hesitate to do so.

Please Georgio, enlighten me to a digital camera that does NOT get dust on it's sensor....

Yes I think you are wrong.

You are wrong to read posts where perhaps one small group of people have had a problem and then assume that means everybody has had a problem. The M9 does not need babying like a vintage MG, but sometimes the owners do. There are far more people who think the M9 is a robust camera that does exactly what it should do, but like every new camera it could perhaps do with a firmware upgrade fairly soon (as is always the case with a Canon or Nikon). So dust on the sensor, needing to know which way to insert an SD card (there is a diagram), and needing a firmware upgrade do not make it a bad camera or one to be wary of.

Please do read me well; I said "even if I do not swob lenses".

But to answer your question, my at least 6 year old Olympus E-1

never has dust on the sensor and I switch lenses quite often,

also outside.

Olympus got it right from the beginning.

I read it perfectly.

Many people in the Canon/Nikon world attribute huge amounts of dust and oil on their sensors due to the use of the zoom lens element even when they never remove their lens.

I think the word you are looking for is "swap" and not "swob". Swob is actually closer to "swab" which in your context would mean "even if I don't clean lenses" which would make my comment even stronger.

I should have said 'change' lenses may be.

(English is my second language).

Anyhow I do hope Leica will get their M9 to the level what it should be in the first place.

And if a firmware update will do the trick, time will tell.

I am still in the market.

And regarding Nikon and Canon, that's why I waited for Olympus.

Oly was the last company to release their SLR, way after Nikon and Canon,

but the E1 was designed from scratched.

Victor -

I love that second shot - great composition, detail and color - not bad for JPEG - what lens did you use?

Enjoy the journey,

Vic

Thank you.. trying to capture this DC area feel with now, close to 3 ft of snow.

Was 50 lux stopped down a lot

BTW, temperature in the 20's, slipped in the snow once..

I was wobbly

the M9 was fine! :-)

Being from Connecticut, we know what you are going through - but we are glad that we are not going though it now like you guys down south!

I had an interesting problem this morning. Camera was shooting as normal, but was recording a black frame:confused: No, I did not have the lens cap on. It would meter and shoot as normal, just recorded a black image. I tried removing battery and card, no change. Finally, I reset the camera in the menu to "stock" settings, and now it's back to life. WTF?

Had you set a custom WB beforehand? There is a bug of some kind where after setting a custom WB you will get black pictures. Its infrequent, but its there. Read this thread for a bit more detail from a few of us that have experienced it. If you had set a custom WB beforehand, posting a little something in that thread about what you had done might be useful in helping isolate the problem:
