Firmware bug?

I did the following

1. Shot a manual whitebalance (for economy lights)

2. Tested it

3. Went to AWB, shot some frames

4. Went back to manual WB and recalled the setting

5. Saved it under User4.

Result: in User 4 the camera appears to work normally, but all images recorded are black.

Is it just my camera, or is it a general firmware bug?

I don't even have a lenscap for the lens I used. The camera exposed at 1/60th too. I was switching between different user settings, and it was only the setting that had the manual WB in that showed the behaviour.

Jaap, I've followed the same sequence as you with the custom white balance saved to profile 4 and all seems to be OK when using the profile. I also exited the profile, changed the white balance to daylight, took a picture which was OK and then set the profile back to 4. The color balance and picture I then took with economy bulb lighting were correct.

So what happened with your profile 4 is a mystery .

I went even further. When I used the camera , this time just setting the manual white balance coming from my standard profile, it still produced a black frame. Only after I reset the manual white balance to a different setting, it started taking normal shots again.:confused: It seems it simply didn't accept the balance set.

I haven't had the black frame syndrome when using the custom WB, but it did occur once when I was locking a shadow exposure on the button and then shooting a very bright snow scene. Clearly no comparison in circumstances because I was using AWB, but the result was a black frame with fully recorded information f8, 1/60th sec etc

I once had the same problem of black images after setting a custom WB, but I have not been able to reproduce it since then. It seems like a bug, but it must take just the right combination of steps to make it happen. In my case, I had not saved a custom user setting, but I had gone and deleted the original image the camera used to set the custom WB. Had you deleted that image as well?

No- I didn't. Maybe not a bug, but a glitch, far more difficult to trace. It does mean though that it is advisable, when using manual WB, to check whether the camera is actually recording the shots taken. The EXIF of the images reads : 1/60th, ISO 800, irrespective of the settings of the camera.

Interesting. I deleted all of them right away so I don't recall what the EXIF said they were.

I just tried to reproduce your problem and tried to reproduce my problem, and I can't.

I would say this happens with one certain WB setting are a small range of kelvin settings.

You could try setting your UP and then change the kelvin number. Or note what the kelvin setting is in the UP, set the camera to another UP and then change the WB kelvin to that same number.

If after changing the UP 4 to a different kelvin number gives you regular images and setting the kelvin to that specific number in another UP gives you black images then it is that specific kelvin setting that is causing this.
