cheewai_m6 Posted February 9, 2010 Share #21 Posted February 9, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) The GF1, with its outstanding 20mm lens, is available at Amazon for $1,000. For probably 90 percent of photographers who want a high-IQ point-and-shoot, this is the better camera. I've still got the X1 on pre-order for two reasons: the X1 will ultimately delivery better quality images and the X1 is so much more sexier looking than the dorky GF1. Aesthetics - both in the image and camera body itself - are important to me. the gf1 isn't a particularly big camera, but it's proportions and design manages to make it look bulky and clumbsy. i agree, the x1 is so much more elegant. Advertisement Posted February 9, 2010 Posted February 9, 2010 Hi cheewai_m6, Take a look here A cow eating grass. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
markpsf Posted February 9, 2010 Share #22 Posted February 9, 2010 I have and like the Panasonic GH1 a lot. It is slightly larger than the GF1 but has an excellent large bright EVF built in and better ergonomics. It may also have a marginally better sensor. I think that apart from the looks, the X1 is a very different "animal" (no pun intended given the title of this thread! ) It has a simpler menu approach, as befits Leica, more retro controls, apparently better possibilities for zone focusing, more closely approaches being a pocket camera, as well as having a superior sensor, and far better high ISO noise control. If I am headed out shooting and want fast AF plus a very good built in EVF and fine images for web publishing I'll grab the GH1 with one of its very good small lenses. But I'm hoping I'll want to grab the X1 at least as often for a very different shooting experience and perhaps some photos I'll want to print larger than 9 x12. h00ligan Posted February 9, 2010 Share #23 Posted February 9, 2010 GF-1 at $1000 is gouging resellers. The kit is $850 most times.. just a heads up.
Driver8 Posted February 9, 2010 Share #24 Posted February 9, 2010 GF-1 at $1000 is gouging resellers. The kit is $850 most times.. just a heads up.As of today... At Adorama, the GF1, with the 14-45 zoom lens, is $870. The same package is $900 at B&H. The GF1 with 20mm lens (the superior lens) is unavailable at both sites. $1000 appears to be market price for the 20mm lens kit.
jsrockit Posted February 9, 2010 Share #25 Posted February 9, 2010 The GF1 with 20mm lists at $899 on the Panasonic site... that is what H00ligan meant. Generally things sell at list or below.
marcg Posted February 9, 2010 Author Share #26 Posted February 9, 2010 Or are you one of those who will reflexively trash Leica without regard to the merits? No, I haven't noticed that I am one of those.

However, for those who like a classic camera dials and simplicity, I'd recommend the X1. I like the X1 because it is simple. A dial for shutter speed, a dial for aperture, a simple menu, etc. To me, that is lacking in the digital world. The GF1 and E-P1(2) are nice, but are too "swiss army" in its approach to features.
