and a color shot for your reference....

You have taken some absolutely beautiful pictures. Congratulations on your purchase.

At "leak time" the X1 looked, to me, to be the camera that could correct all the wrongs of my DP1. Apparently it does not, but it does provide a much better high ISO performance from what I have seen and read (have not tried it yet). And the flash cannot help but being better

Still, the DP1's output is the first camera in years that have made me bother drag along a tripod (a somewhat idiotic routine considering the small size of the camera - thank God for the zipshot) complete with Franiec' cable release adapter and an old fashioned cable release and as such it functions very well. I wonder if many an X1 buyer will not end up the same way.

I suspect the Leica lens equals the DP1 lens + Foveon sensor combination - at least. Currently it looks to me like a missed opportunity, but on the other hand - once the X1 is delivered with LR3, I cannot quite rule out buying into this squandered product myself :o

It sure is pretty and the IQ stunning. The continued feedback from early adopters will be interesting to follow.

I think it's coming on the market with to many flaws and limitations. My guess is within a year these cameras are going to be plentiful on ebay and prices are going to nose dive like a leaking submarine. Especially if they come out with an X2 that addresses all the concerns. The inital buyers are buying future (and a short future) paperweights. I think most of them know this though.

The X1 will go down in price, but not as bad as other digital cameras. At least it'll keep some worth and won't be $100 in a few years like some brands.

I agree, but then it won't have been $400 new like those brands.

Quick update after using he camera much more over the last days.....

It grow's on you!

Not used the M8 at all and now feel much better with the X1..the AF speed is becoming anon issue ..the only niggling thing is the Aperture dial is constantly moving easily...maybe how I am handling the camera but would prefer that dial to be a bit stiffer.

Am only using the External finder and it works well for me.

And again the image quality is stunning, truly stunning...much cleaner then the M8 at higher ISO.I normally shoot at 400 where the difference is not that big but for some 'low lighters' this might be important.

Most of my initial frustrations on the speed are now slipping away.

A great camera which for its size delivers gorgeous images.

Look at the way old DSLR prices have dropped... not only P&S cameras.

Personally i think that 2nd hand prices of todays newer digi slrs and compacts will begin to hold their value. Reason.. because we now have digi images which are so much better than the ones from previous generations. My first digi camera was a Nikon D1x. I used it only for jobs requiring fast turnarounds. For everything else i stuck with film. Fast forward.. Buy and sell as every year the digi technology became better and better. In the 'old' days i hated the look of digi. It just looked plastic.

Now with the latest generation of cemeras from all the leading brands we have images that actually look real. The pixel race of ine is bigger than yours has at last calmed down. We will now see tweaking and the addition of video etc etc.

Have a look at the Nikon D300 after the D300s came out. The resale values of the D300 stayed very high. Around 850/900 euros in Holland for example when a new D300 was costing 1350 euros. Yes cameras from 2 generations ago are cheap. I expect cameras like the Nikon D300/D700 and D3 and Canons 5DMK2 to hold their values very well. Leica's M8 will not do so well but the M8.2 will hold its value. The M9 for sure will be a very good investment. The X1? Until the X2 arrives in a few years i would expect t see the price drop by about 5% in the next year but that rather depends on currency exchanges. Its producing excellent images so there is going to be a good demand which in turn will keep resale prices high.

For the consumer end of the digi market and im talking about cams less than 700 euros their depreciation will be larger.

Stewart,

regarding the D300 value, serious Nikon pros who are shooting with long lenses take this model as a smart teleconverter when they are out in the field.

This is impossible for the M8 due to RF with it's tiny patch for longer lenses. So the market for APS-C models in the range of prosumers is more stable now compare to the modelchange of D70 - D200 - D300.

Cheers

Bernd

This is why people who love long leica lenses are using the u4/3 format... the crop factor doubles your focal length. A 135mm M lens becomes a 270mm lens. Not my thing, but kind of cool if it is your thing.

I'm not a tele-shooter and 50mm will be used not so often, but my EP-2 with the small Tele-Elmarit 90mm PLUS the antishake PLUS the good viewfinder, this is a low weight- long range experience.

The camera certainly DOES grow on you. Its small, almost silent character does indeed suit documentary and street photography.

So much so that I updated my review, with an account and pictures - from my local market.

You get used to its quirks but there are still about half a dozen small improvements that would make a big difference:

* Turn the AF/MF button into a true toggle switch so users can get focus with AF then switch to MF so it doesn't have to refocus for the duration of the photo sequence

* Auto ISO Settings should include a faster minimum shutter speed to avoid camera shake/ subject blur

* Enable Focus Check/ Image Magnification as part of Auto Review so one can instantly check focus. D-Lux and LX users know about this. Given the difficulty focusing the X1 it's the least Leica could do.

* In Live View, stop reading the histogram off the LCD (or whatever is going on) because it's not the same exposure reading that the lens and sensor are getting.

* Leave the camera on! Extend the Auto Power Off function to "eternity", especially when using an optical viewfinder with the LCD turned off. I don't want it to go to sleep. It takes too long to wake up!

The rest are hardware improvements that will have to wait for the X2.

Mark

* Auto ISO Settings should include a faster minimum shutter speed to avoid camera shake/ subject blur

Since you mention it, I guess Auto Iso work the same that as on the M8/M9. I fully agree with that request that some of use habe been asking for a long time. A "maxïmum" minimum speed of 250 or 500 would help a lot in certain situations !

and one more for fun...different lighting...

the AF is very accurate IMO.....really no problem with the EVF

I agree. The AF Macro option could then be "hidden" to the right of the AF option so that you would need to move right to select AF Macro when needed. One click on the AF/MF button would then always work as a toggle between AF and MF.

The other way could be that one click always toggles AF/MF and two clicks -> AF Macro. As a matter of fact I don't remember exactly how this works with the current version. Maybe it is possible to learn how to use the AF/MF without looking at the screen...

* Auto ISO Settings should include a faster minimum shutter speed to avoid camera shake/ subject blur

Agreed. On the other hand the minimum shutter speed is hidden in the menu and not so easy to change back and forth in the field. Even if there was a faster minimum speed availiable in the menu, I think I still just would keep it at 1/30s and just move to manual mode when faster speeds are required.

* Enable Focus Check/ Image Magnification as part of Auto Review so one can instantly check focus. D-Lux and LX users know about this. Given the difficulty focusing the X1 it's the least Leica could do.

Yes, and also delete should be availiable during Auto Review.

* In Live View, stop reading the histogram off the LCD (or whatever is going on) because it's not the same exposure reading that the lens and sensor are getting.

Sounds right, I haven't noticed this myself.

* Leave the camera on! Extend the Auto Power Off function to "eternity", especially when using an optical viewfinder with the LCD turned off. I don't want it to go to sleep. It takes too long to wake up!

Yes that should be an option, but I would not use it myself. My Nikon D200 never turns itself off and it happens too often that I forget it on. The manual focus setting should not be set to eternity after off/on. This is annoying when trying to use zonefocus.

I have also written some suggestions of how manual focus could be improved here: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-x1-forum/115254-manual-focus-speed-comments-suggested-firmware.html

AF/MF switching does currently require you to look at the screen. The AF/MF button offers three options, including Macro.

The first press of the button activates the AF/Macro/MF option. Subsequent presses scroll through the options.

You need to press the button THREE times to get from AF to MF (activate, two presses to select), and TWO times to get from MF to AF (activate, one press to select).
