Pangur Ban Posted February 5, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 5, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm off to Sweden for a skiing holiday soon - it's been as low a minus 20deg C where I'm going. I've just got an M8 - should I take it with me or stick with my faithfull M3? I'm concerned that it'll be just too cold for a digital camera there. nb I won't be taking it on the slopes with me, it's for other times during the week. Advertisement Posted February 5, 2010 Posted February 5, 2010 Hi Pangur Ban, Take a look here M8 and sub-zero temperatures. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
cbretteville Posted February 5, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 5, 2010 Shouldn't be a problem, but your experience will depend on your batteries. Keep spares in an inside pocket. I use my M8 in sub zero temps all the time and have never had any issues. That includes down to -25C. The most important thing to remember is to let the temperature of the cold equipment rise slowly. Don't bring it in slung over your shoulder or around your neck. I place mine in a bag or backpack while that can be closed and bring in in like that. Then leave it to "thaw" slowly thus avoiding condensation forming. Even if you chose to bring your M3, you should treat it the same way for the same reason. Carl BTW, minimizing the use of the lcd may be an idea if it is really cold, like below -15C.
jsrockit Posted February 5, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 5, 2010 Honestly...the M3. My M8 has flaked in just below freezing weather.
braza2013 Posted February 5, 2010 Share #4 Posted February 5, 2010 I've used my M8 in Norway on a regular basis this winter, without problems. Just follow the advise about condensation above, and you'll be fine.
Makten Posted February 5, 2010 Share #5 Posted February 5, 2010 I'm concerned that it'll be just too cold for a digital camera there. Not at all, but maybe too cold for the M8. I've been using mine in the swedish cold for the past months, and it has the habit to just die after a couple of hours. It's not only the battery. If it's cold enough (below lets say -15 Celsius) you can't start up the camera even when the battery has been "rewarmed". I'd say the M8 works fine in very cold weather, but not for extended periods. Take both with you! Edit: Cold day in Stockholm @ -18 C: Yes, vignetting was added in post.
SJP Posted February 5, 2010 Share #6 Posted February 5, 2010 that is quite a nice picture, in fact it is very nice I love the enormous color range & the subtlety of the whole composition Definately worth freezing your **lls off for.
Pangur Ban Posted February 5, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted February 5, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Wow. A wonderful photo. I'm off to Åre. I'll probably take the M8 and see what happens but have a back up too.
grduprey Posted February 6, 2010 Share #8 Posted February 6, 2010 Not a problem. I use mine in -25C and lower all the time in the winter. Keep extra batteries in your coat pocket to keep them warm, as all batteries hate cold. The one in the M8 will be just fine, as it takes quite a while to penetrate the body internal temps. atufte Posted February 6, 2010 Share #9 Posted February 6, 2010 I'm working with a M8 in Norway and Iceland all the time, and when working under -10 i just stick on of these self adhesive heat patches under the bottom plate and the batteries will last as long as a warm summer day, the patches i use will stay warm for 8-10 hours and costs next to nothing... Photon42 Posted February 6, 2010 Share #10 Posted February 6, 2010 I've used the M8 in two different family like skiing vacations with varying weather conditions. Not a single problem. It has lived in the backback when not in use. No really extreme weather, though. Rgds Ivo
