tom in mpls Posted February 3, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 3, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am just starting to use 90mm on my M9 and I know a magnifier will make my life easier. I do not intend to use anything longer. I know there are trade-offs as one chooses higher magification. What power magnifier have you found best for 90mm? Is a low power adequate? And can I leave it on for shooting 50mm or even 35mm? This is really 2 questions then: -What mangification is best for 90mm? -What magnification is best for use with 90mm and shorter focal lengths? FYI I do wear glasses; blind as a bat without them.

jyrkialanen Posted February 3, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 3, 2010 Hello. I have a 1.4x magnifier that works great with the 75 lux, but with 50 lux it's impossible to see all the frame lines at once. I wear glassees, so without them I guess the 1.4x could work well also with 50mm. I haven't tried 1.25x magnifier with 35mm, so can't help you with that one. geaibleu Posted February 3, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 3, 2010 Hard to say. I bought the 1.25 a while ago and I must say that it stays in its case most of the time. I thougt I needed it to use the 135 with my M7 of the 0,85 variety, but in the end its just like a crutch since it may enlarge but it also somewhat diminishes the clarity of what you are seing through the viewfinder. I have not tried the newer 1,4. There is an old say about wines: The best wine is the wine you like best. The same applies to these little loupes. Leica's advertising is sometimes a bit too strong on the self glorifying side.

tdtaylor Posted February 3, 2010 Share #5 Posted February 3, 2010 Can the Leica diopter be used with the 1.4 or other Leica magnifier? It would be ideal if you could leave the diopter on and screw the magnifier onto it, rather than take the diopter off then re install it behind the magnifier. Thank for any help. cbretteville Posted February 3, 2010 Share #6 Posted February 3, 2010 You can put the diopter on the Leica mag, but not the other way around. Some of the 3rd party mags have built in variable diopter correction. Carl
cbretteville Posted February 3, 2010 Share #7 Posted February 3, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) BTW, for a 90mm I'd use the most magnification you can. The 1.4 makes the M9's finder roughly equivalent to that in the M3 (using a 90 on the M3 is something else). You do loose a little light through the VF with a mag, but it is manageable. BR, Jyrki You are talking about the M9 or M8 - not about M for film with a bigger magnification of the viewfinder? I have no problems with the 50mm-frames and the 1.4xmagnifier with the M8 and wearing glasses The 35mm-frames get too wide to see without moving your eye. With the 0.85-viewfinder of the M6 I would have problems to see the 50mm-frames if I used the 1.4x-magnifier. The 1.4x is a lot bigger, so sticking more "into your eye" which might be uncomfortable. Optically it is as good though more effective for 90mm as the 1.25x version.

Can you still see either 50mm or 35mm lines on the M9?
wparsonsgisnet Posted February 3, 2010 Share #10 Posted February 3, 2010 I use the 1.25 and it's on the camera ALL the time. I use it from 24mm to 75mm on both M8 and M9. It makes using the focus patch much easier. As a lot of my work is of subject moving (dance), I focus, but don't use the viewfinder winder when I'm taking pictures. Therefore, framing is not an issue with me. I find this accessory indispensable. On the M8, for which I bot the 24mm lens, I could see the frame lines. tom in mpls Posted February 4, 2010 Author Share #11 Posted February 4, 2010 I think I will try one of the non-OEM 1.25x magnifiers.
