noah_addis Posted February 3, 2010 Share #21 Posted February 3, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) It would be interesting if this lens were free of the red-edge problem. I may have to try one. I'd love to see some samples from it with an M9...maybe of a scene with an overcast sky, which is where I often notice the red edge with my coded 21 Elmarit ASPH. By the way, I was under the impression that the new wide Summiluxes do not have the red-edge problem.
Advertisement Posted February 3, 2010 Posted February 3, 2010 Hi noah_addis, Take a look here Zeiss 21/2.8 ZM on M9? Anyone?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Bartie Posted February 3, 2010 Share #22 Posted February 3, 2010 These are the only dull images I have. When I say dull I mean dull ,overcast light...the colour image is more or less straight out the camera and the mono was just a quick conversion in PS. Bartie Posted February 3, 2010 Share #24 Posted February 3, 2010 I know I don`t like the distortion either,I`ve just posted these images just so people can see what kind of images you can get from this lens with the M9.As I said there has been no post capture work done on these. Not sure I am digging that distortion. Jeff Jeff, That is not lens distortion, that is just the skewed perspective of any wide angle lens. It is very easy to correct in the transform area of Photoshop. It is why architectural photographers always liked shift lenses or shift cameras before PS made life easier. Wilson I'm sorry, but that is NOT just perspective distortion. It is lens distortion and perspective distortion combined. Look at the way the tops of the towers curve back in towards the corners. It actually looks a lot like what is often referred to as "moustache" or "wave" distortion, and its something the Zeiss lenses are known for. It seems that Zeiss has made a design decision to have very sharp corners at the expense of a slight bit more distortion. Optical design is always a trade-off. FWIW, poking around, it appears those that have seriously reviewed compared this lens have called out distortion as a weak point. Still, I have a lot of lenses that suffer from some form of distortion, and its just a question of whether its an issue for me or not. Jeff

Jeff The Leica 21 2.8 asph has more distortion from my reading of it (1.5% vs 1% on the ZM acc to data sheets). The Leica distortion pattern is a little different, but is also wave shaped. This shot shows very little of that wave distortion though. The vast majority is perspective distortion and remember not everything about 600 year old castles is straight! In use I have noticed nothing but perspective distortion with my 21 2.8 ZM. One of the things that attracted me to it was the lower distortion compared to the Leica lens. The 4.5 version has practically zero, but the speed was an issue.

Regards Andy Andy, looking at these again this morning, I think I can see a slight pinkish tinge to the sky, especially in the upper left corner. This seems to match what I have seen with other lenses that have a mild touch of the red edge syndrome. Do you have any other images that might show this? Hank Taylor Posted February 7, 2010 Share #30 Posted February 7, 2010 Just got a Zeiss 21/2.8 ZM last week and I'm very impressed with not only the quality of workmanship but the color and clarity that it delivers. Andy I am wondering about flare resistance and if there is any point to using the hood. The lens hood looks useless.

Hank Taylor Posted February 7, 2010 Share #35 Posted February 7, 2010 Jeff, so far there doesn't seem to be a problem with color fringing in the corners. I read recently that the Zeiss 21 mm f4.5 has that problem. For my money this is an excellent lens. I was at first concern that the f2.8 might be a little big, however after actually seeing it and using it even with the lens shade attached I found it quite conformable. I liked the fact that the lens shade is metal, offering some protection against bumping into something. Hank
JPH1962 Posted February 8, 2010 Share #36 Posted February 8, 2010 Hi there! regarding this thread, I upload a pic of this combination (M8 & 21 2.8 Biogon) showing the answer to the red corner question. Important, best results coded as 21 2.8 ref 11134 - not 21 ASPH. Beside conversion from DNG, nothing has been done. The light dargended corners are caused by a UV Filter with a mount beeing a bit too deep.... JPH Welcome, dear visitor! tom in mpls Posted February 21, 2010 Share #39 Posted February 21, 2010 Do you get a rash? Almost. I hate how much space they occupy, and it's awkward putting them in a bag with the hood on. Plus the issue of blocking the viewfinder. Of course on an M9 the framing not be done through the built-in viewfinder. Add to that, I'm never certain they do much since they are so wide they can't block very much extraneous light.
bedaberger Posted February 21, 2010 Share #40 Posted February 21, 2010 So if I had a M9 I could show you fullframe shots... ;-) The coloured corner problem would be interesting in this special circiumstances: f 2.8, focused to infinity. There would be most vignetting and the lens system is closest to the sensor compared to close focus distance. Any colour casts then?? Could somebody try this? Thanks, Peter
