tom0511 Posted February 2, 2010 Share #21 Posted February 2, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have shot several comparison shots of subjects at f1.4 and f2.8 and I believe it is not possible to create this look with f2.8. I use the Leica D-Lux 24mm viewfinder (I thought the Leica M 24VF is too expensive). However if focus is critical I look through the M9 viewfinder/rangefinder and guess the rest. This was one of the reasons I prefer the 24Lux over the 21 Lux. Still it is much more relaxing for the eyes to use an external viewfinder IMO. batmobile Posted February 2, 2010 Share #23 Posted February 2, 2010 What you and also do, and I have done this with my 21 before, it to compose using the external finder and note where the image centre is. The continue to focus, refocus on whatever you want as the point of focus moves (perhaps a head) and recentre the focus patch. So you only do the initial composition using the extermal finder. This works very well where the composition is not too tight and where there is a small margin for error. Its ideal for when phtographing a person in a space. I have ordered a 24 Lux and will use it on a Leica 0.58 body. The entire VF is about 24mm so will allow for composition and focusing. I might add an external finder for when shooting hyperfocally and following action. With some tape over the frame line window I will have a nice clear finder of the right size inside the camera's finder though Only issue will be occlusion of the lower right. I'll report back on how well it works.
Samir Jahjah Posted February 2, 2010 Share #24 Posted February 2, 2010 About $4000. That's the biggest difference. Unless you need the extra stops the Elmarit is one of the finest 24s ever made. The Lux is amazing considering its speed though it does suffer from some purple fringing. I have not yet experienced that purple fringing with the 24mm Lux

The 24 (and 21) Lux are priced so high that it is difficult to justify but it really allows some special opportunities.
carcam Posted February 5, 2010 Share #27 Posted February 5, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Tom- besides being a nice shot- that is one beautiful baby- wow! With a model like that even my less expensive Leica lenses could make great pictures. I have struggled with this focal length- with my other cameras, it is most often used but with the Leica rf, not so much. Now you are tempting me... Logic108 Posted February 5, 2010 Share #28 Posted February 5, 2010 I think the reason for the 'lux is so that you can capture movement in low light. The 24mm Elmarit is still a lens that you can use in low light as long as there is not much subject movement. Here is an image I took with the Elmarit in such conditions. I find wide lenses on the M8 can be held steady with slow shutter speeds. Welcome, dear visitor! batmobile Posted March 23, 2010 Share #29 Posted March 23, 2010 The 24 Lux is certainly difficult to justify price-wise, but two stops is two stops and thats a heck of a difference if you need them (the difference between no shot (or a blurry one) on D3200 and a very nice and sharp one, or the difference between shooting on gravelly D3200 (at 1200) and shooting on smoooooth Neopan 1600 (at 640) and having another stop of speed to boot for nice crisp negs. I just got mine and it appears to be performing perfectly. I will report back in due course.
ezc203 Posted March 23, 2010 Share #30 Posted March 23, 2010 Been using the 24 Lux for a couple of weeks now. I really dig the speed. Here's an example of the low-light performance. digitalfx Posted March 24, 2010 Share #31 Posted March 24, 2010 The 24 Lux is one of my favorite lenses, second only to the 50 lux. These were shot w/ the M8:
Guest Posted March 25, 2010 Share #32 Posted March 25, 2010 For this decision price matters, size in this context imo less so: please compare the extra size and weight you put on your M going at 28mm from the max. aperture of the Elmarit Asph with 2.8 to 2.0 for the Lux versus at 24mm: from 2.8 to 1.4 where you gain TWO stops. And at 24mm it is the same as at 50: soon you can't remember how it was with the slow lens. Don't even have a Nocti for an exact comparison and the 24 Summi doesn't have a "rendering" of it's own = it's a sharp lens . (Easy guys, not one wrong uttered here against any of the Noctis I hope ). Rent one for a week-end: on Monday you'll start saving to have your own. If I was to have just one lens on an M (and an extra SLR ) this would be it. Yes, if push came to shove like this, I'd keep this one and hand over the 50SummiAsph AND the tri . Cheers!
