jsjxyz Posted January 29, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 29, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Need to add a collection for my set now 35cron/50 noct/75lux now I plan to get 90mm, but the main thing it should be compact. I used to use 85mm nikkor 2.0 as a standard lens with my F3 a long time ago. 75mm 1.4 is good but too heavy and big to carry it everyday. Now I want to buy 90mm lens that will becoming a daily lens for me... Should I go for 90 cron AA, 90 Summarit or 90 Summicron? Jerry

k-hawinkler Posted January 29, 2010 Share #2 Posted January 29, 2010 If you want compact then 90mm f/2.8 Tele-Elmarit-M is a good fit. A good one should be less than $500. Good luck.
luigi bertolotti Posted January 29, 2010 Share #3 Posted January 29, 2010 In my opinion, the one to exclude is the Summicron un-asph...Summarit are great lenses (I have the 75) and probably you spend about the same amount for a new Summarit and a mint used Summicron (I can be wrong, didn't give a look to current prices). Summicron AA I think (not have it) is a step-up expecially if you REALLY want to work wide open, and has embedded hood, which is the only "defect" I find in my Summarit (the screw in hood of Summarit is a little disturbing for storage).Summarit is lighter (360 vs. 500g) and this can be also a factor to consider, apart the obvious question of price. Personally, "my" 90 is the Tele Elmarit M... I found a mint item significantly less costly than a Summarit, and had no esitation to buy it (it is also chrome... which for me helps a lot...) viooh Posted January 29, 2010 Share #4 Posted January 29, 2010 The latest Elmarit M - which you didn't mention - seems like a good choice as well. If speed doesn't matter, also consider the new Macro Elmar 4/90, which, as a collapsible lens, is more compact than the others, performing on par with the best designs (according to Erwin Puts - from my personal experience I can only vouch for the Elmarit). richfx Posted January 29, 2010 Share #5 Posted January 29, 2010 I second the 90mm Tele Elmarit-M recommendation. This lens is true to Oscar Barnack's vision of top quality optics and very small size for hiking and easy carrying.

jsjxyz Posted January 29, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted January 29, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I second the 90mm Tele Elmarit-M recommendation. This lens is true to Oscar Barnack's vision of top quality optics and very small size for hiking and easy carrying. Isn't the 90mm Tele Elmarit-M longer than 90mm summarit? If I am not mistaker, I read somewhere that 90 summarit has the style of old lenses too. JSJ
40mm f/2 Posted January 29, 2010 Share #8 Posted January 29, 2010 I really like my Macro-Elmar M 90mm f/4.0. Small light optical quality as good as it gets - I had the Apo Macro Elmarit R 100mm but I prefer the Macro Elmar. The only aspect I do not like is the supplied hood - it's very awkward to change the lens with the hood in its reversed position - I am looking for a smaller hood which can stay in place. adan Posted January 29, 2010 Share #9 Posted January 29, 2010 Jerry: 90mm Tele-Elmarit-M - length 61mm; diameter 51mm; filter size 39mm; weight 255g (per my calipers and scale) 90 Summarit - length 66.5mm; diameter 55mm; filter size 46mm; weight 360g (per Leica's spec sheet) Sure you're not thinking of the Elmarit-M (no "Tele" in the name, just recently discontinued in favor of the Summarit)? If compact and light-weight are critical, the 90 Tele-Elmarit-M has no competitors. Even the Cosina/Voigtlander 90 is heavier and larger, despite being a half-stop slower. KM-25 Posted January 29, 2010 Share #13 Posted January 29, 2010 The only downside to the 90 Tele-Elmarit is the potential dreaded etching or flare, but a shade helps greatly in most cases with the latter. I rarely use a 90, but when I need one, the TE-90 rocks, it is the lightest lens I own in any format. First shot on M9 during demo day in Salt Lake, wide open, second shot taken from a taxi on the way to JFK, M3, Kodachrome 64. Enjoy! Welcome, dear visitor! Printmaker Posted January 29, 2010 Share #14 Posted January 29, 2010 I have both the Tele Elmarit and a late Elmarit M. The 90 Elmarit M smokes the 90 Tele Elmarit in IQ but the Tele Elmarit makes a nice light pocket lens. Tom
HeinB Posted January 29, 2010 Share #15 Posted January 29, 2010 True that the tele-elmarit is magnificently compact and light; in my view however it delivers a very slight bluish tinge as compared to the more color-true summicron AA; also contrast seems somewhat lower. Don't know but perhaps these flaws can be fully addressed by processing afterwards? Good luck!

!Nomad64 Posted January 29, 2010 Share #17 Posted January 29, 2010 Depending on whether you privilege speed or compactness. I got a mint 2nd hand Elmarit 90/2.8 (not Tele Elmarit) and it's a superb lens. Its only inconvenient is being prone to flare. Barring that, IMHO is superior to my Zeiss Planar 50/2 in detail rendition. As to corrections Erwin Puts defines it quite an APO. KM-25 Posted January 29, 2010 Share #18 Posted January 29, 2010 I have both the Tele Elmarit and a late Elmarit M. The 90 Elmarit M smokes the 90 Tele Elmarit in IQ but the Tele Elmarit makes a nice light pocket lens. I must have a really good TE then because mine is pretty darn nice, not as good as my other lenses, all aspherics, but great for what I need it for, a pinch hitter when a 50 is too short. I'm sure the 90 Elmarit is great, especially in terms of contrast and color saturation, but for a non-90 guy like me, the TE does it's job very very well for the price and the size and weight can not be beat. haroldp Posted January 29, 2010 Share #19 Posted January 29, 2010 I have a pre-asph 90 Summicron which is excellent, and a tele elmar-c f4 which I also like. The one I actually carry and use the most is the The 90 Elmarit M, which is about as good as the pre-asph 90 Summicron up to it's max opening, and much lighter. The elmar-c is lighter still, but not quite as good, and the elmarit-m is small and light enough to not make any difference to me. I hope this is helpful. ...
