lct Posted September 3, 2010 Share #21 Posted September 3, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks LCT, I actually have this hood along with the correct hood for the summaron but wanted a more modern looking hood... I prefer the square over the circle which is why I asked if it would be possible to use this hood with no detriment to performance. Yes it is possible to use it and it won't cause vignetting as long as it stays straight but there is no stop pin on the lens preventing the hood to rotate so if it does you will get some vignetting for sure given its rectangular shape, you see what i mean? budrichard Posted September 3, 2010 Share #22 Posted September 3, 2010 Screw-on metal hoods may damage filter threads of lenses in case of bump or drop. Been there already, thanks no thanks. The suggestion was not directed at you but the original Poster. Fear of damage to your M equipment is an unreasonable decision making process for why one would not replace a flawed system (snap on OEM hood) with a solution that works. After having my 35mm ASPH hood pop off numerous times and finally having a restaurant employee ask me if this belongs to me after I lost my hood again, I purchased a Heavystars hood and never looked back. If you fear damage to your equipment, best to leave in a safe and not use.-Dick
lct Posted September 3, 2010 Share #23 Posted September 3, 2010 The OP did not use an OEM hood, budrichard. All i can say after 30+ years of practice is that the plastic as well as metal Leica snap-on hoods are safer than any screw-in metal hoods i've used as the latters are dangerous for the filter thread of the lenses in case of bump or drop of the latters. I've had one of mines ruined for this very reason. The hood was litteraly stuck to the lens after a bump and Leica had to change the barrel of the lens to allow the use of filters again. Given the price of those little gems my duty is to warn our readers about this. FWIW.
Xmas Posted September 3, 2010 Share #24 Posted September 3, 2010 so given that both of the latters are square i would say it's a no no. . If you fit an elastic band in the location groove the hood wont rotate easily. Works a treat with pre asph 35mm summilux as well. Noel
mobeyone Posted September 18, 2010 Share #25 Posted September 18, 2010 Well, bit the bullet and bought one, photo as below! 50mm summicron with 35mm hood... | Flickr - Photo Sharing! Just waiting till December before I pick up my M8!
russell Posted March 1, 2011 Share #26 Posted March 1, 2011 The 79-94 Summicrons 50/2 (black 11819 and silver 11825) have no stop pin preventing the 12526 or 12524 hood to rotate so given that both of the latters are square i would say it's a no no. For 11819 and 11825 Summicrons, the regular hoods are the metal 12585 and plastic 12538 vented hoods. Both can be reversed on the lens and provide a good protection. What is the experience of everyone? I have one of these version 4 50mm summicrons(11825). I have two 12585 hoods but both of them rotate too much when mounted. Is this normal? Is there any trick adjustments one can do other than putting a small rubber band in the groove? Do the 12538 hoods have a better grip? And will these hoods scar up the silver chrome? lct Posted March 2, 2011 Share #27 Posted March 2, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) 12585 and 12538 are the same snap-on hoods, only difference is plastic or metal. Just press the buttons before rotating yours and you won't get any significant wear before 20 or 30 years.
russell Posted March 2, 2011 Share #28 Posted March 2, 2011 Just press the buttons before rotating yours and you won't get any significant wear Thanks. But I've a slightly different problem. It's rather that the hoods don't clamp on very tightly. So they just spin around a bit loose. I've tried this with my two hoods as well as two hood I had a chance to try out at a dealer. lct Posted March 2, 2011 Share #29 Posted March 2, 2011 Perhaps the plastic 12538 has a better grip then. I have not kept mine so i can't check if it is tighter than the metal one sorry. Here a 11825 Summicron with what looks like a 12538 hood at first glance. Welcome, dear visitor!
