Budget IPS Screens for Photo?

Recommended Posts

Ok, I understand that the more expensive NEC, Lacie, and Eizo stuff is the standard, but what about budget IPS screens like the HP LP2475W, NEC EA231WMi, or the Dell Ultrasharp 2209WA? Anybody here using them for Photo? Of course I would calibrate it with my EyeOne Display 2 and I know it will not be up to par with the former, but are they usable?

Cheap stuff will not work at the end if you are looking for correct display of color dispite the calibration.

Eizo's Color Edge CGxxx are the only ones that can show you a neutral gray.

If you buy a cheap display to cover the time you need to be able to buy a real display for PP, buy one with as much manual controls for brightnes, contrast etc. as you can! You will need those when you calibrate the display.

Thanks Luuk... I understand what you mean, and I can even afford an Eizo, but I just don't want to spend that cash on the display. My problem is that people many years ago were not using LCDs on the Eizo level and still did well. It seems many people made do with less. I'm looking for the best compromise between high-end and the low-end. I can say definitively, I will not spend more than $1000 ... I just have other things that interest me that cost money.

Any IPS pannel will give reasonable results provided it's profiled correctly. If you're planning on using it on your MBP, check what monitor port you have on the MBP. Newer Unibody MBP's have mini DVI and you'll need a display that supports it. If you have an older MBP then standard DVI is the interface and it is much more common.

Don't beat you self up on this question, just avoid glossy displays and get one with good controls for adjustment and you'll have good results. When you do profile, just make sure you set the luminance at 80 Cdm.

I can use the Apple DVI adapter Apple mini-DisplayPort adapter for any DVI screen I believe right?

In theory, yes. In practice, I believe that some have had problems with some monitors not working 100% with the adaptor. Do a search of the relevant discussion forums on the Apple website and you might be able to determine some displays to avoid.
