Odd EXIF issue with 135 Apo Telyt

Joshua - a list member, raised this with me. In LR2.6 the EXIF for a manualy selected 135 APO Telyt comes up as the Elmarit M 135 2.8 - Odd as I don't think this happened in LR 3 beta. Not sure if this is a firmware or software issue. Do others have similar experience?

Screen shot from LR 2.6 below.

To see if it is firmware, just put the chip back in your M9 and check the info screen. (After setting this manually, of course if you take a fresh shot.). I'd bet there is a software table somewhere in LR that hasn't gotten the manually available values filled in yet (or not until 3.0).

This raises a question to Carl and Sandy, or resident EXIF/MakerNotes decoders -- how does the M9 tell the DNG file that a manual table entry was set? In the past (M8) the 8 bits of frame lever position and 6bit code were passed in the MakerNotes. What's happening with that info this time?

Well, you have to read the message given in the EXIF.

It says: "Why did you take me, one of the best Leica lenses ever made, to take a photo of your microwave??? My poor cousin, the old Elmarit, could do this for you."

ROFL!

So far as I am aware, there is only one code in Leica lens code table for a 135mm lens, which is code 9, and is associated with the description "Elmarit-M 135mm f/2.8 (I/II)". Accordingly, that is what both LR and CornerFix will show for a code 9 lens.

If there is a different code for an Apo Telyt, pass it along to me, I'll update CornerFix, and no doubt LR will also be updated.

Sandy,

Indeed, LR recognizes the 135mm APO-Telyt as code 9, "Elmarit M 135mm f/2.8 (I/II)". However, this lens is listed as one of the lenses that can be set manually on the M9 and identified properly as APO-Telyt. It is not a big deal, I was just curious whether my case was isolated, which apparently is not as Chris confirmed his to do the exact same thing.

Thank you very much,

Joshua

That's correct - the M9 has menu selections for the two lenses separately, but both menu selections result in the same code being written to the files's MakerNotes. Hence what LR or CornerFix read.

Sandy, the first interesting question is what codes does the M9 put into the EXIF in the usual 6-bit position when you enter a specification for an uncoded lens? Do they default to the newest model of the same focal length, or are there variations intended to call up an appropriate vignetting correction? If the latter is true, we should have some new information for Carsten's table.

Second, when manual table entry is used, isn't there some information about it in the now voluminous Maker Notes, supplementing the EXIF? Do you want some help or samples to look for it?

Scott,

The code appears to be exactly the same code as a coded lens on an M8 would produce.

As regards the new MakerNotes and whether the actual menu selection rather than just a lens code might be in it, that question would have to go to Carl. I only looked into them enough to get the basic information that's interesting from a CornerFix perspective.

Regards,

Sandy
