Hi,

out of curiosity, how far could a firmware update go on an M8?

new menus?

better image quality?

even better WB?

Just intrigued to know what is possible?

With such high investment, it would be a comfort and an incentive to buy knowing that Leica continued to care for developing an "old" model with "issues"

Great Camera, but could/might be even better!

Menues quite fine for me - no need for "Mäusekino". That's Leica-like (low-featured-straight-ahead)

Image quality is already on very high level - even think excellent in it's class

AWB solid good - after last redesign (matter of taste sometimes ... ;))

Think that the M8 is quite mature. I did not know serious issues waiting hardly solving. Leica will support M8 still in future. Hope now they will spend some M9 features to it at next FW. Let's come in and see ... (soon)

Then check for the M9. I think sometimes it's still me who should carry out some better performance ... :D

I bought my M8 from another rangefinder site and haven't had to try updating firmware. Will I run into any issues? Technically, the camera isn't in my name.

That's always a possibility, but I've never had an issue with camera firmware yet; Leica or Canon - and many revisions on both.

Me too, my M8 was bought second hand and I've had no probs upgrading firmware......would love to see v 2.05 with manual lens selection ;-)

otherwise no, my M8 and 2.04 is just fine and dandy!

Hi All,

From seeing posts from other members who have contacted Leica about this subject an M8 firmware update is due in the first quarter of this year. I also seem to remember reading that Stefan Daniel had stated that the manual lens list featured in the M9 could not be added to the M8 due to space limitations. I do not know about an alternative implemenation of this or other M9 features. I understood that a change related to high ISO banding would be included in the release.

They ought to allow a non-compressed full bit option. I seriously don't understand how this has not been allowed from the beginning. Leica kept on saying that they didn't notice a difference that would justify the speed cost, but 1. this should be an option, 2. I have seen sufficient number of pictures taken with a cheap p&s that were indistinguishable, under the conditions and setup they were taken, from those taken with 8000$ equip. Why don't just enable it?

Some gurus here already talk about "strong possibility" that there will be M9 & M8 FW-update end Jan. / begin Feb. And rumors telling as well that it could be a "upgrade" for the M8 (may be to pay for with some bucks) opening at least partly M9 feature contend.

I'm looking forward straight focused to Solms ... let's see if it become a 2.005 or a 2.101 or even a 3.001 ...

paid or free i recommend the following functions:

A// interval ISO settings-i believe that 400, 800 or 1000 iso in M8 will look more than excellent.

B// Exposure Compensation like the M9 and all other civilised cameras-even the cheapest point & shoot has that on your finger tip.

(it was a large designer flaw to put EV COMPENSATION in menu as it turns it into a totaly useless function as is not accessible during actual photography and that designer has to accept his/her mistake and correct it.)

C// the dead-protect- button to act as a quick ISO selection.

D// unlock the uncompress raw recording in higher bits.

E// manual lens selection- can be a creative tool but i believe is not that vital and i'm not missing that a lot.

can be free or paid if more processing power is needed and alterations or additions have to be performed in the factory.

Exposure compensation is now available without menu diving - though it's fiddly. Press shutter release to the first pressure point and turn the control dial to adjust.

Agreed that an option to remap the Protect button to control ISO would be very welcome.

Only on the 8.2 I'm afraid. It's something that has been raised in other threads on firmware upgrades, but hasn't been made available for the 8.
