Goodbye Epson and Other Hard Drive/Viewers; Hello iPad

That's the bit I'm struggling with. What can it do better than an iPhone or a MacBook?

I don't see a "killer app", I just see an iPhone on steroids without the phone part. .

It will have its own set of apps... give it time. It's not even shipping yet. A killer app will appear...many will. Outside of the phone and internet, what killer app did the original iPhone have at launch?

Reading through the posts here I'm surprised at the number of naysayers there are. Let me say right away that I think the problem is going to be whether they can make enough of them.

Something I read a few weeks ago suggested that new products like this tend to be dismissed by those who are not the main intended audience. Maybe that's the case here, but in later versions who knows, maybe even targeted adjustments in Lightroom will be possible. One way or another I'd bet that most of us on here will have one within 18 months.

From what we can see the device will do many of the things which are currently laptop duties (like this message), but will be better suited for the task - whether on the sofa, sitting up in bed (or on the throne). My guess is that the attractive price will help persuade many of us that, even at this early stage, it's useful complementary gear to assume some laptop duties. There's also the 10 hour battery life - If I were running an airline I'd be wondering about these million dollar projects to install new IFE on all these planes.

Wish I had some Apple shares..........

That's one of the problems I have. If you are going to interact with a forum such as this then you need to be able to type your responses to messages. To do that you need to lay the unit flat. So why not use a laptop with a proper keyboard? I fully accept that if you are just following hyper-links it would be very easy to use.

I'm obviously expressing my impressions here, and perhaps Apple will sell them by the pallet load. Personally I'd have preferred something A5 sized rather than A4 so that it could fit in a pocket/bag. That could be useful for a guidebook if the book used the GPS intelligently, but how many people buying a $30 guidebook would prefer to buy a $600 iPad?

Yes it looks sexy, but that's all I see for _me_ at the moment.

People are slow to catch on... the iPod was not a huge success on launch... it was Mac only and took about 2 years (and a Windows version) to become the MP3 player of choice. The iPhone took awhile to get rolling... then when the apps started showing up, it went completely mainstream. Many people don't see a need for this, but in due time, they will see why it is very useful. That said, if someone doesn't already have a laptop or desktop, you should not buy this as your only computer.

And now everyone has an iphone or ipod touch and this is the same thing with a larger screen.

If 90+ percent of the home computing public couldn't use an iPod is it any surprise it wasn't a big seller at first?

My recollection of the iPhone launch is that they sold out within hours of their launch - and let's remember that even now the iPhone isn't the biggest smart phone player.

I know it seems that way now, but it won't be the same thing for long. Apps designed exclusively for the iPad will take this in a different direction to the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Yes, they did sell out, but they didn't offer that many in the first place.

JSRockit - I've read through your reviews and you have a good point of view. That said, I still think things should have been added. As (I think) I said before - I do think they will sell well, however this is not a revolutionary product, it's evolutionary. And backwards at that (the small one came first). I'm sure it will be fun to use, I'm sure it will be frustrating for some to use. I do believe in multitasking - and am doing so right now on a laptop. I know that ladies with long fingernails are not going to like touch typing. I do think that as apps come out, we will see added value. I do think there is a relatively large segment of people that will think their ipad with 3g that fits in their pocket (aka iphone) is good enough, and better in some ways - and probably won't change that thought until there is compelling content - which will take time. All that said, I think version 2 will be what beta 1 should have been.

David Pogue, NYTimes : "... Like the iPhone, the iPad is really a vessel, a tool, a

1.5-pound sack of potential. It may become many things. It may change an industry or two, or it may not. It may introduce a new category -- something between phone and

laptop -- or it may not. And anyone who claims to know what will happen will wind up looking like a fool..."

Right on!

Now that sounds like a fair assessment (while covering your ass).

Apple has made it once again to amaze the world with something that is somewhat new.

Combination of extremely low prices for something that is not just a new product but a great new series of products with amazing capabilities.

Of course they based it in previous research and the iphone, but with this you have:

Cheap+multitouch+gorgeous display+light and elegant device.

For photographers, it already killed Epson's portable disks, and the best digital frames and/or albums for photo showing.

It's the best (due to ease of use) web browser and email client.

And now, you can use it for work as well making you extra mobile.

And last, but most importantly: Apple is by far the #1 content provider. Music movies and now books, it is the king on the hill kid... You can see that by how it kicked McGraw hill in the butt when the later disclosed some confidential info about iPad, before Jobs present it.

Like some already said, it is not a matter if it succeed, but how fast Apple will bake them
