Goodbye Epson and Other Hard Drive/Viewers; Hello iPad

I am very curious how people in this group will react to the opportunities provided by the iPad, Apple's new tablet.

The Apple site shows up to 64 gig of flash memory and a 9.7 diagonal screen. The accessories on the Apple Web page show that you can input photos from your camera using a USB cable from the camera to the iPad or an SD card reader.

The New York Times (I believe) was reporting a $499 entry cost. I assume that is for the 16 gig non 3G enabled device. Seems to me--on first impression--that this is a far superior device than the Epson and other hardware/display devices that probably are more expensive on a per gig basis than this device and don't have anywhere near the screen real estate.

I will be curious to see whether Apple releases a version of Aperture for the device.

Apple - iPad - Technical specifications and accessories for iPad.

What is your thinking?

Don't care about this device for photo... but for $499, I'll buy one to play with on the couch. I never understood why people worry about storage on these types of devices when SD cards are so cheap and that is the best way to store stuff on Vaca. If you need a portable for photo, you get a laptop...

I too smell a lemon. But what concerns me more is that this seems to be a retrograde step for computing and for consumers. The device will be firmly controlled by iTunes, which means that Apple decides what you can and cannot use it for. And, just as importantly, Apple takes 30% of all software revenues for the device.

Now imagine that was the case in the traditional computer market. Imagine if HP sold you a laptop, locked up the operating system behind its own software and only allowed 3rd party software to interface with the computer hardware and its operating system through a very restrictive set of APIs. And imagine that anyone buying that 3rd party software had to pay 30% of the cover price to HP. That is what Apple has created with iTunes, iPhone OS and the App store.

We need swift, co-ordinated worldwide regulatory action on this issue now, before the model becomes so entrenched that we take it for granted.

If HP did it, it would be crap.

I thought that the iPod was a lemon, back on the day. Judging by how many people now have iPhones, I don't think most are worried about buying a "closed" product.

Apps for this are cheap, just a few pounds, I can't see an issue here. You're happy to pay Adobe an eighteen month rental charge of £150 for Photoshop ...

I was really excited about the iPad, so I could retire my Macbook Air. But apparently, the iPad won't do it for me, unless I can edit photos on it. I just don't see Apple releasing an light version of Aperture for the iPad in the future and it doesn't make sense to buy this device to travel along with my Air neither... So I am sticking with the Air, which is a great travel companion, longer than I expected.

To Magd0328, I take it that you are not an Apple fan?

I use mainly Apple products, but I also have to use Windows for some purposes, so I am exposed to both. To be honest, I far prefer the Apple environment. With Apple keeping a tight rein on hardware and software API, we are spared the chaos that the Windows world endures. You buy something, you take it home, you plug it in and it works. No struggling with settings and compatibility charts. Personally, I like things to work, and I don't object to paying a little more to ensure that. But that's just me. :)

Storage becomes an issue; only 64 gb could be quickly gobbled up; I saw no mention of ability to use external storage devices.

BTW I don't see any lemon here. I think it will be a monster hit, but not for people needing to do photo or video processing. It will do what most people need from a computer.

I'm with you! SD cards are dirt cheep. I've never managed to fill all 12 of mine on a job or vacation. And my 13 inch Mac Pro laptop is light and small enough to take along for downloads/DVD burning etc. Still, I can see a place for a $499 ebook reader/web/photo viewer/presentation device. And having had enough hard drives fail, solid state is the way to go.

And now Apple has an ebook store... grr, should have bought Apple stock when it was $22 per share.

@ Nicole,

I'm an Apple user, actually, if not a die-hard fan. I own a MacBook Pro on which I am writing this and I also own an iPhone. I agree that there are many advantages to the platform. But I also like the fact that when I bought Photoshop (for example) I paid my £600 or so to Adobe directly, and didn't have to pay an extra £180 (30%) to Apple for it.

Best rgds

ditto!

I may even buy it, since I like reading books on the go... but I won't retire my Macbook air...

Still missing from the critics.

1. It will not operate my S2 remotely. - Nikon and Canon already have App

2. No iPad dock in my Ferrari.

3. The Ink from my Mont Blanc isn't drying.

4. My RED 4K movies wont play on it.:)

:D:D

But as for point 3. Did you remember to fill your pen with digital ink?

I don't think 64 Gigs is enough to take along on a trip to store photos.

I had the same thought, but I also recall the iPod started out with smaller memory than it currently has so maybe some in the photo community will want to wait for iPad 2.0. The other issue that I have no idea about is how this device handles RAW. I am assuming this is a software issue, but I would be surprised if the built-in photo display program handles RAW.
