This is an EU policy to increase understanding of other languages and cultures.

If after giving it a good try you decide you don't like German language and culture, you can click on the Union flag at top right in most windows, and this will register your choice.

Next month's language will be Estonian.

That's a tribute to the new german EU commissoner Günter Oettinger who is probably the best man for an international job... :-)

There had been some doubt that the new german minister of foreign affairs, Mr. Westerwelle has adequate language skills for his job. That earned him a nickname: "Westerwave" (Wave = Welle in german).

There is no doubt that the new EU commissioner Mr. Oettinger plays in a higher league. In this video he lectures on the importance of speaking english, followed by an example for his skills... enjoy...

By the way: Westerwelle an speak english fluently. He only told to the press that normally a press conference is held in the native language inside the country. That is really a normal thing - everywhere in the world. All that was a "storm in the waterglass".

And some little more "Off Topic":

His (Mr. Oettingers) english attempt is only embarrassing for my country! If he cannot speak english - he should not try read a text he does not understand....sure there are millions in Germany who can speak better english than he does... :o
