Erik, you could produce artwork with this technique and subjects such as that shown. It is wonderful to see old lenses giving pleasure in a new rangefinder era.

Made a A4 sized printout and its really nice. Totally different from my Nikon glass. Very pleasing texture in this old lense. Thinking of a 30 to 40 cm canvas mabe?

 

Prise is a bargin for this lens - lot's of fun to use.

This was also taken with the 135 Hector, Shot at ISO 160, f8 @ 1/350 on the M8.

A dull day today, but I found my old Summaron 3,5cm 1:3,5.

It celebrates its 60th birthday this year. I taped an UV/IR filter to it to see the difference. Not stopped, no PS other then some slight 'blacks' addition.

It's time to reconcider the glass collection, this old stuff gives soft pictures but it is very good!

Next project is a 1938 Elmar.

I'm liking the rendering for that shot. Do you know how 8x12 or 8x10 prints look for situations like these with this lens? E.g., have you had prints made? Sharpness is overrated--but does the printed photo look "in focus" where the plane of focus should be?

I regularly make prints of 20x30 cm with both the Elmar and the Summarit.

 

The Summarit at 1.5 has an overall soft look but a clearly defined 'sharp zone' where the focus is...it is not as 'sharp' as the Lux 50 for example but is clearly defined.

In prints it looks to me to be more natural, but that is just my opinion.

The OOF areas beats the Noctilux in my opinion in terms of aesthetics :-)

 

A superb lens IMO and mechanically a masterpiece of smooth engineering.

This is a photo of my M8 with a 50mm 3.5 Elmar with a strange lens shade. I purchased a Focoslide at an auction in the 60's. The copy stand the the focoslide was mounted on went back to the early 50's so I'm not sure how old it is and I can't locate a serial number. The shade slides over the lens and lines up with the lens f stop adjuster, it mounts to the lens with a set screw. The shade has threads on it so you can mount a filter on it. You can change the f stop by turning the inner ring of the shade. I think this was more of a attachment to allow easy access to the f stops more than a shade.

long lenses on the M8 have been a bit underrepresented so far ... ;)

 

this is an example of a Telyt 200/4,5 from the 1950s (design from the 1930s) used with Visoflex 2 (and finder of the Visoflex 3) on the M8. No IR-cut filter.

The head of the Telyt was screwed into the Focorapid (from the early 1960s) via its appropriate adapter (14113).

If closed to the aperture of 5,6 this old design is often astonishing.

 

I also like the helical focusing mount of the Telyt 200/4,5: It is very compact, smooth and fast.

Stabilization (of both focusing variants) works nicely with the Pistock-C and a long strap.

The combination is relatively compact (and not too heavy) and can easily be used for hours without fatigue.

Your "35 mm Elmar 3,5" photos are astonishing!

I am looking for an Elmar 50/3,5 for my 'vintage set' for the M8.

Obviously, I should also look for the Elmar 35/3,5!

May I ask if you have cropped your Elmar 35/3,5 photos (I mean, in addition to the approx. 50 mm equivalent which makes the M8 of the lens)?

the first one above of my daughter in color is cropped about 10% top and right.

The B&W one above is cropped about 20% all over.

 

I convert the DNG to grayscale in LR, use high contrast present and normally add a bit of black.Might lighten or darken a bit and tweak here and there, but not too much.

I then sharpen in Photoshop and export as JPEG.

 

My Elmar is old but perfect condition, always use a hood and shot these at 160 asa.I do not use a IR filter.Both were shot at around f4 or f5.
