I bought it!

After searching since 2008 for a nice used M8 in silver and selling my Digilux 2 earlier last year to help with my M8 fund, today I bought a very clean M8 with 1789 actuations. Now to save up for a lens for it. It was about $1000 less than a new-old-stock M8 at my local dealer and about $800 less than a demo model. Can't wait to play with it some more, the construction is absolutely tank-like and the fit and finish is pretty amazing. I've been lurking and reading this site since 2002 when I bought my Digilux 1.

Congrats! I also, after much longing, bought at M8. Unfortunately, it had some issues and went back to Leica while I anxiously await its return. Which lens are you going to buy? I was able to get a 40mm Summicron-C for a very cheap price, but I'm not sure if it will focus correctly. I'm very interested in a 35mm Summarit f/2.5.

Holy picture-taking devices, Gotham Historian, welcome to the forum! :D

You've been lurking since 2002?? Well I'm glad you've chosen to 'speak' at last and I hope you enjoy your M8 as much as I have enjoyed mine. Don't forget to post some pictures in the photo forums when your ready.

I'll be in the Batcave's darkroom if you need me.

Pete.

I was thinking about getting a Leica Summicron 28mm. The first thing I have to do is to do some research and learn about rangefinders and cameras in general. My digilux 2 was set on automatic at most times and I also rarely used any of the Digilux 1's manual settings. With the M8 on manual only, I'm sure it'll be a challenge to learn this camera. I just got back from the camera store and skimmed through the Bower's book Leica Digital M Photography. I might order this book on amazon to start up as a primer for my camera. I'm hoping to keep this Leica for life as I deeply regret selling my D1 and D2, as a result, I'm not in a rush to buy a lens. I'll buy one when I have the adequate funds to pay for some nice Leica glass.

Thanks for the link to rangefinderforums. I never heard of that site and will explore it fully.

Congratulation. Let the obsession begin. :D

Every picture on my Flickr Italy site was taken with the Summicron 2/28. I vote for it as your first lens. It is the classic 35mm equivalent frame and one of the best lenses ever made... you can't go wrong with that lens on your M8.

Welcome,

Rick

... I was able to get a 40mm Summicron-C for a very cheap price, but I'm not sure if it will focus correctly....

I've asked here several times about the alignment of the cam tracker on the M8, and had come to the conclusion that it was now centered on all cameras. If that's so, the 40C will work fine. (That is, no one reported that his cam tracker was off center. I know, lack of proof of existence isn't the same as proof of non-existence. :o )

The C lenses had a sloped cam, as you know; so since 25% of M cameras at the CL's introduction had a non-centered cam tracker, they wouldn't work with the C lenses.

Now, from what I read on the forum, some of the newer Leica lenses have sloped cams. If that's so, then the M8 and M9 et seq all have centered focus trackers, and the link Mak10 posted represents a mis-adjusted lens.

I'm not a member of rangefinderforum. Could someone get the guy complaining to post an image of his camera, without lens, seen square on from the front? I'm curious whether his cam-tracker is centered. (Or is he the same Makten as here? Then post the shot here.)

My prediction, as I said above, is that it is, and that the problem is with the lens.

The 40C is marvelous, but the Makten on rangefinderforum has a list of confusions about the camera and various lenses. I just want to know whether the focusing tracker on his camera is in a place to track the 40C accurately. Many of the comments he got about it are off-kilter. I have no opinion about his other lens problems.

I rented an M8 to do a real life, on my screen/paper, comparison between my M6s and Nikon DSLRs and the M8. It was completely persuasive. I predict you will be very happy.

You know, I hadn't thought of it before. I have been tossing around the gf1 vs x1 vs used m8 for a WHILE now - and it never occurred to me to rent one. Thanks for the smack back to the obvious!

On the other hand, Once I push for the body - I have no idea how much even a most basic used lens would run... so maybe I shouldn't rent one :)

Everyone here hates my wallet!

Edward, compliments for your new baby.

Look on eBay for a used, late Elmar 50mm f:2.8 and buy it, it is not at all expensive and will perform like a charm on your M8.

I couldn't stand to have it on the table and not using it...

Congrautalions! The ideal would be if you have Leica friend who would be generous and let you try one or two lenses, together, so that you can discuss their relative merits. If not, try you local Leica dealer and see if he would allow you to try a demo lens in his shop.It would give you vital feedback on how the cropping factor suits your style of photography.
