hector_jorge Posted January 22, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 22, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Yesterday I found in a camera shop a Leica IIIC. The camera has on the left side of the top plate an eagle with the Svastika, the camera number is 387.014 and below the number is the inscription WH. The lens is a Summitar 1:2 5cm. Nª 585.113.The camera seems to be intensively used, the vulcanite is complete and the crome was worn out in some of the camera angles. The viewfinder works well, and all the shutter speeds too.The camera screws have traces of been removed that it is natural for its age. Inside the camera is one cartridge (original) for the film. About the lens, only the colapsible lens barrel isn`t cromed, and the front lens hasn`t scratches. The lid of the lens is painted matt black. The questions are: Is that camera original or a fake? and if original, how much can I pay for it as a collector item? Any help will be very much appreciated.

stunsworth Posted January 22, 2010 Share #2 Posted January 22, 2010 Impossible to say without a photograph or two, but 99.9% of those that appear are fakes. If the shutter button had a standard cable release thread in the middle it's a fake. If the cam on the rangefinder mechanism isn't circular it's a fake. earleygallery Posted January 22, 2010 Share #3 Posted January 22, 2010 I'd say it's more likely to be a fake than not. Do you know what a genuine lllc looks like? As Steve said if you can post an image or two that would help. There are obvious fakes, slightly less obvious ones and then the genuine Leica's with fake engravings. If the shop is selling it for a 'bargain' price why would that be? Buyer beware!
luigi bertolotti Posted January 22, 2010 Share #4 Posted January 22, 2010 Eagle and Svastika sound a lot Russian... but an original engraving like that is indeed published (Lager, I seem) and you are in Argentina... is well known that a number of Nazis emigrated in South America just before and after WWII end... this could be a possibility... hector_jorge Posted January 22, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted January 22, 2010 Impossible to say without a photograph or two, but 99.9% of those that appear are fakes. If the shutter button had a standard cable release thread in the middle it's a fake. If the cam on the rangefinder mechanism isn't circular it's a fake. The shutter button is top rounded and has no hole for a cable release, and the cam on the rangefinder mechanism is circular.

He has an offer of 1250 USD for the camera.

Many thanks to all for the advise. I took the decision not to buy the camera. I will save the money for buying a brand new Summicron M 28, in my next trip to Deutschland next June.
