One Challenge 2010 - Hotel Accommodation

I can't remember if we discussed it in Malta, or at the London Meeting in November, but I mentioned it may be worth approaching some of the hotels in Venice to see if we could get a preferential group rate.

I attend quite a few aviation conferences every year and the organiser will usually contact a number of hotels to get competitve rates. The selected hotel/hotels would give a special rate when receiving enquiries from any person mentioning that they are attending the specific event; by name.

That way each individual would be responsible for making his or her own booking and paying for it on an individual basis.

If people are interested I would be prepared to draft a suitable email which each of us could send to any contact hotels we may have, or hotels listed on the 'net.

Once replies have been received we can decide on a specific hotel and make that one the official hotel for the event. Hopefully, as it would be 'off-season' we may be able to get a decent rate in Venice.

Be interested in your thoughts.

I have already booked our flights, and nearly booked a hotel. Our preferred hotel isn't accepting bookings for October just yet, so we have been looking around at alternatives. I like (and feel a need this year) to have something to look forward to.

The problem, as I see it, is that there are hundreds and hundreds of hotels in Venice, from the seriously pricey ones adjacent to St Mark's to cheaper ones out on the Lido.

I am going to try to organise the meal at a restaurant that we visited two years ago, about 100 yards from the Accademia Bridge. It's at the southern end of the Rio Tera de la Carita and caters for monks at a local abbey, so they are used to larger numbers served all at once.

The place we stayed in last time was a vaporetto ride away, north of the Rialto, but that wasn't a problem.

So, firstly, if this is to be achievable, we need to agree in which part of the city and a price band. Venice ain't cheap unless you work at it, and we were planning on budgeting up to £200 per night. We also need to know some idea of numbers, of course.

IMHO, this is actually quite a difficult thing to do, unless it IS a conference type visit, and someone else is picking up the tab...

It's a good idea, but I think people's budgets will vary too much to get a sufficiently large number of people to agree on one hotel. Plus the fact that will probably be under 30 people attending, and not all of those will want to stay in the selected hotel.

This is true, Steve.

By happenstance / posts on here, many of us who went to Valletta stayed in the same hotel. One party (not us!) stayed in the posher sister hotel next door :)

Venice is a relatively small city. It's easily possible to walk from the north to the south end in half an hour, and the vaporetto ply up and down the Grand Canal until around midnight, so access to most areas from most areas is very good. Access to the Lido may be more challenging late at night, although there is a night service throughout the night.

This is the restaurant that I propose. There are two places with the same almost the same name, run by the same family, within 100 yards of each other. It's the restaurant, NOT the taverna, that we have eaten in before.

Restaurant San Trovaso

And yes, I know that it's 9 months away, yet...

Mestre is a 20mins ride by bus away from central Venice (Piazzale Roma). Apart from significantly lower hotel rates, it might also be a preferred solution for everyone, who prefers a less noisy sleeping environment...

The bus tickets can be used for the ferries as well.

I've just gone ahead and booked flights and hotel on Expedia. Heathrow-Venice return on British Airways plus three nights at the Holiday Inn Venice - Mestre Marghera, for five hundred and forty seven quid which I didn't think was too bad. (That includes 'her in-doors.)

Will arrive on Thusday early afternoon and leave on Sunday afternoon.

Look forward to seeing everyone in Venice.

Tom,

Anne and I are renting a flat for the week end through a contact my in-laws have. It is located between St. Marc's sq and the Rialto bridge. Don't have the exact location yet.

Carl

Sounds great. Perfect location and I'm sure you'll enjoy. Look forward to seeing you again in October.

Welcome to the Forum!

If you substitute "Venice" for "Malta" and "October 16th" for "October 17th" in this link, you will get the idea.

http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/forum-member-meetings/99883-malta-challenge-17-october-2009-terms.html

It's a little early to arrange details yet, but we generally meet up late morning, have a coffee, do the Challenge, then meet again in the evening for a dinner. This year, we may also be suggesting a "night challenge", as Venice is a particularly good place to take night photographs.

If you want more details of what is involved in the Challenge itself, I believe that there's a link on the thread above top a pdf.

If you want to know more, just ask!

Venice will be the 7th time we have done it and it gets better every year.

This year's prize will NOT be an M9 - that I can guarantee :)

We were very fortunate to have such a generous offer for the prize from Red Dot Cameras this year, but I wouldn't want to count on that every year. Usually, the prize is the total of the €10 entry fees, which is fine. More often than not, people have then donated that to a charity, so everyone is a winner.
