LR 3 Beta - any danger in using it?

Over on the Luminous Landscape post processing forum some people are saying that they would not use LR 3 Beta at this time for any important work. Since going digital with an M9 in November, LR 3 Beta is all I've used for importing my photographs because I understood it had a profile for the M9 files. I have yet to go beyond importing them into the Library. My question is, have I jeopardized the integrity of my work by not using LR2 for any reason? Or is there nothing to worry about in using LR 3 Beta since the import process and subsequent post processing does not effect the Leica M9 DNG files - and any bugs with the program will not effect my files?

I believe you will be OK. There is always some risk of beta software behaving badly, although I've been through a couple of Lightroom Beta versions (1 and 2) without incident. I tried LR 3 Beta, but returned to LR 2 since I have a large catalog of images and having a separate catalog for Beta 3 shots was too much bother. In your case you have no legacy catalog and when release of Lightroom 3 occurs you can import all your Beta 3 work. The comment about not doing important work in Beta 3 comes, I believe, from Adobe who want to remind users that it is an immature program. I would not process paid work in Beta 3, but I would be comfortable using it for my personal shots.

Danger ? No, LR both 2 and 3 - are non destructive, meaning that it doesnt touch your DNG's.

Problem ? Perhaps.

Adobe clearly states ( and thats a reason ) that LR3 Beta Catalog may not be usable in the final version. That means that all the work you have done ( adjustmetns, etc etc ) may not be transported to the final version.

That's why I just briefly used the Beta version, just to see how it goes and then stop using it - dont want to do all the work again - again because Adobe clearly states that the catalog import may not work properly and the dont guarantee.

So basically there is no harm done. The only downside is that you might have to do all the adjustments again.
