Custom L Bracket for the M9

Mine arrived today and I'm very impressed with the precision build & finish. However, the precision fit is very tight on my M9 to the degree that at first I thought I'd got it stuck on permanently . As it was I had to dismantle the grip/L pate to get it to fit at all. It seems like it'll loosen over time but has anyone else noticed this?

Btw, yes I did follow the instructions religiously and engaged the tab first etc etc.

I'll have to try it on the M8 and see if that's a more forgiving fit.

The other thing to be aware of with the L bracket is that it seems like you need to relocate your strap to the ring on the bracket. This is a bit of a bummer for me as I sometimes shoot with the camera in a Luigi case and then put on an L plate/arca mount on a second base plate for tripod use. I'm going to have to move to a single ring/strap mount on the right to accommodate this.

Mine arrived today, and it also has a very tight fit. I had a hard time removing it. Over time it will wear the paint off the bottom of the M9.

Besides this issue, it is very nice. low enough profile that I may even consider leaving it on full time. Im also rethinking my decision to order the base plate only. I wish I ordered the grip and L bracket now.

Is the tripod mounting hole in the baseplate in line with the center of the lens mount ie. in line with the lens optical axis? It looks like it is from the photo. I ask because of Pano use, although with a RRS clamp there would be provision for adjusting this.

Yes centered with lens unlike the Leica plate.

That's an interesting point, Graham. I ordered the plate and L bracket combination. I don't have it yet but it looks as though the original strap lug is maybe still accessible as well as the new attachment point (?)

You would need to thread the strap through however. Maybe it might hang a little differently? I guess it depends on how you use it and your preferences too. I just have a wrist strap on the opposite side so fitting/removing the L plate should not be a problem as far as that goes.

My camera is normally in a Luigi case too so obviously you can decide new base plate OR case at any one time :)

I found that I liked the setup very much, with one exception. The grip felt slippery to my fingers when I used it.

The solution for me was to cover it with the same leather covering material that I got from Morgan @ Camera Leathers.

I received the material this morning, and about 1/2 hour later these are the results.

An Exact-O knife and a little patience were the tools.

Update on RRS BM9 with my M8 & M9.

With MY cameras, the M8 is an absolutely perfect precision fit. THe M9 fit is very tight and arguably too tight on my camera not so much for mounting it but the effort to remove it.

It would seem that the M8 & M9 must have some subtly different dimensions which is counter to what we all understand I believe.:confused:

Hmmm.... My M8 chrome base is a good fit on the chrome M8 but a tighter fit on the black M9. The M9 base is a good fit on the M9 but looser on the M8. The bottom rims of the M8 and M9 appear to have a similar black surface finish, so it looks as if there's a very small dimensional difference between my sample of two.

Here is just another option, especially if you want to use a nodal point. The rest of the site shows just the bracket for $199 usd. For me, a L-bracket would just add another level of weight and complexity for use with the Nodal Ninja 3. The set up shown adds a leveler and a cool rotator. But, I admit I still don't completely get the L-bracket concept for the M.
