proenca Posted January 20, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 20, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi there, Having bought a WATE now and with the family trip in the upcoming months, seems a bit foolish of me to go into trouble to have a M9 - specially when the supply seems very limited. So I was pondering of selling my M8 and get a M8.2 used somewhere but again, my M8 was bought new, never had a problem and seems a good one - plus I have a few thousands of pictures taken with her and a few memories already - some bond was created - call it corny if you like. I then emailed Leica Solms to ask if the program was still running and if the costs on the webpage were accurate - 10 to 12 days turnaround time was given to me and the prices are slightly reduced ; upgrading my M8 with new bright framelines + new shutter + CLA + shipping via UPS back to Portugal = 950€ , versus 1000€ on the webpage without shipping. And to be honest, I would loose pretty much that if I would swap my camera for a used M8.2 ( or even bit more - I reckon they would give me around 1400-1500 for my camera which has a couple of dents here and there and I would have to pay 2500 to 2900 for a good M8.2 ) and this one is already mine plus it has a extent of the warranty. I'm happy and will most likely order it next month so if you are considering to do the same, email Solms and enquire the price, you might get a good surprise. Bad surprise was the leather recovering service : I asked and was quoted 280€ to 320€ to recover my M8 with real leather by Leica Solms.. urgh... By the way, my quoted price of 950€ doesnt include the sapphire glass : I wont bother with it to be honest
Advertisement Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Hi proenca, Take a look here M8 upgrade - still going and with discounts !. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
marknorton Posted January 20, 2010 Share #2 Posted January 20, 2010 The Leica leather recovering service is expensive but as we have covered before, using a leather from cameraleather.com takes just a few minutes and is great. If you ask Leica not to recover your camera after the upgrade, it would make the job even easier. One point to realise is that if you have the sapphire glass upgrade, you get a new rear casting so if it is damaged (mine had a large paint chip) you get this fixed free of charge. The sapphire glass is both better optical quality and pleasantly cool to the touch.
jaapv Posted January 20, 2010 Share #3 Posted January 20, 2010 I tried that, Mark. Leica won't return a naked camera. However, I got a free Vulcanite upgrade because CS felt sorry for me that they had to remove Morgan's nice green leather.... Did anybody mention that any major work on the camera results in a one year full guarantee?
Tom Johnston Posted January 20, 2010 Share #4 Posted January 20, 2010 would the additional one year warranty cover all aspects of the camera, and if so, would it stand to reason, that one could have one of the upgrades performed annually and extend the warranty each year? jlindstrom Posted January 20, 2010 Share #5 Posted January 20, 2010 The warranty is for the whole camera. AFAIK it's mentioned in the Leica website. And yes, you could prolong your warranty for several years. After all they'd get to check & maintain your camera yearly..
