atufte Posted January 20, 2010 Share #21 Posted January 20, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I believe Andreas sees benefits in terms of Google rankings in having the forum split into as many categories as possible. I don't think the forums will be merged any time soon (if ever?). I appreciate that Andreas owns the forum and can do what he likes with it but for me this kind of thinking is symptomatic of how much more 'corporate' and bland the forum has become in recent years. If this is the case, where is Leica R section...?
Advertisement Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Hi atufte, Take a look here WHY????. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
MikeMyers Posted January 20, 2010 Share #22 Posted January 20, 2010 I know from previous experience at this, that most forum organizers are in fact rather organized people, and want to provide a proper "place" for everything. Twenty years ago, most forum users (but they weren't called forums back then) naturally accepted the multiple places for discussions, and went to the one(s) they were most interested in. My own system back then, m-net, was based on that, and we had about 45 or so forums, each with its own group of users (some of whom were involved in many of the computer conferences, as we called them). I think that's because back then, you had to be involved in computers to even access the conferences, and those people just naturally were, well, organized. I also know that nowadays, most people who use forums are just average people, who don't know or care much about "computer programming". Many of them would much rather see everything in one place. M-Net got replaced by Sgrid.com and the overwhelming number of members wanted everything in a single place. I tried to keep things the way they were first set up, but gave up. Personally, I prefer the organized method, where you can go to the appropriate place and find most of the material on that subject. Obviously, I'm in the minority nowadays, but I hope the current philosophy continues. If I want M9 info, I'll go to that forum. If I want M8 info, I'll come here. If I want film camera info, I've accepted that a single forum is appropriate. If I want to see photos, I'd prefer them to be in a photo forum. From overseas, internet connections can be very slow, and with limited time, it is difficult to find what you're looking for. It's even more difficult if you have to sort through tons of stuff you have no interest in, to find the thing you do want to read about. I'm glad to see that the "link" idea worked here. I didn't know that this software could do it.
andybarton Posted January 21, 2010 Share #23 Posted January 21, 2010 Look how the thread has grown and attracted people who never visit the M8 sub-section to comment and appreciate what has been posted there. I look forward to seeing a lot more work from M8 owners, not only in that thread, but particularly individually, in the other sub-sections in the Photo section.
