I love my M8 Posted January 18, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 18, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I have an M8.2 and a 35mm Summarit. I definitely need something wider for my next lens as I am particularly interested in landscape photography. Have posted before and am now thinking of choosing between 18mm Super Elmar, the 21mm Summilux and the 24mm Summilux. The 24mm Summilux seems to get some very good reviews but I wonder if it is wide enough being only equivalent to about a 32mm lens in "real money", if my understanding is correct?? Perhaps the 18mm or the 21mm would be more suitable? Any help / advice would be very welcome. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

If you get a Summilux 21, you have a 5000 Euro lens that could be of limited use. If you can get by with a Summilux 24 on the M8, I would advise that, being more universal. The same goes for the SuperElmar 18, only the amount of money involved is slightly less. And the M8 has framelines for 24. About 10 days ago I received my CV15mm and find it serves very well as a wide angle lens (about 21mm equiv) on the M8. It is inexpensive enough to experiment with and if you decide you want to go to a 12mm or 21mm later you're not out much and can resell to recoup your investment. proenca Posted January 18, 2010 Share #4 Posted January 18, 2010 Hi there, Jaap and Dave give out some very nice comments : - going for a 21 or 24 Summilux straight away, without owning one of these focal lenghts its very risky ; you might buy the 24mm and find that either is not wide enough and you might want to trade for the 21 or go for the 21 and feel that is too wide and then you upgrade to a M9 later on and its even wider - experimenting with CV lens is a great idea : I do vouch for the 15mm CV Super Wide Heliar has a great little gem - served me well, very nice and not much to complain about - wide, sharp , very light, very small and best of all - cheap. You can pick up one for CHEAP and try it. Like it ? Well thats roughly how a 21mm will be in your M9. Or pick up a 21 or 24 from CV, use them for a couple of months and see which one you prefer before shelling out the big money for a Summilux, always keeping in mind the M9 and that things at one point will be 33% wider. That's my two cents worth anyway. Me ? I used a 15mm CV for almost two years before upgrading now for a WATE - and served me well. 15mm has all those strong points, just a few drawbacks but they are easily forgotten due to its price and super lightness and sharpness : - some mangenta corners if not coded ( can be annoying , just code your adaptor and your set to go ) - hard to use filter that does the IR ; John Millich comes to my mind and does a good adaptation to the lens ; again, I used quite a lot the lens for almost two years and sometimes , when people are wearing black or near black fibers , it shows but never bothered me much - Me personally I dont like the Screw-to-M adaptors has I had them stuck more than a few times in the M8 and needed a screwdriver to rotate them - Flare : its a 15mm, its easy to All in all, a great little lens for next to nothing Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

A great improvement over the first version in my book. These features eliminate some of the drawbacks mentioned above...but I'd still love a WATE someday! ckone77 Posted January 19, 2010 Share #10 Posted January 19, 2010 Have you considered the 21 asph? I have the newer CV15 which is too wide for some purposes, but then there is the 21. Do you have a tele lens / do you have the intention to? If you would like the 75, then a 75-35-24 might be a nice way, if you wanna have the 90 then the 90-35-21 would be a nice combo. joshtpa Posted January 21, 2010 Share #13 Posted January 21, 2010 I'd second taking a look at the 25mm Zeiss Biogon. The lens now practically lives on my M8.2 and it is one amazing lens. The only issue would be is it's limited at f/2.8 in the speed category. For the price, and if you don't need the extra speed, it's phenomenal.
