previlo Posted January 15, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 15, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi folks, can you do me a favour and post or link your shots with the M9 and the 50mm ASPH Summilux shot at max. aperture 1.4? I am curious to see the DOF and "soul" of the 50mm Sumilux at the M9 (compared to the crop-factor of the M8.x). Thanks a lot in advance! chris_tribble Posted January 15, 2010 Share #4 Posted January 15, 2010 A couple of examples - the exif gives either 1 or 1.5 in Lightroom - so it must have been close to fully open Welcome, dear visitor! thompsonkirk Posted January 15, 2010 Share #5 Posted January 15, 2010 Nice pix from Chris! But it's hard to understand what you'll compare: 1. Pix @ 72 ppi on a monitor can't show much about lens performance, besides a look at bokeh. 2. The comparison to M8 is that you'd see the center 3/4 of any of Chris' images. The DOF & 'soul' of a lens won't vary with crop factor, even in a mystical way. Are you concerned about corner sharpness? Vignetting? Kirk
chris_tribble Posted January 15, 2010 Share #6 Posted January 15, 2010 In my experience the big different between the 50 on the M8 and the 50 on the M9 is that on the cropped camera I hardly used this focal length - but on full frame its a close battle between the 50 and the 35 for which gets used most. It's always been a great lens - but it only works for me on a full frame body.

Jerry_R Posted January 15, 2010 Share #8 Posted January 15, 2010 I assume is not so easy to focus spot on @1.4? Again - many photos have central composition. Because very shallow DOF? In fact recomposing witch such shallow DOF can cause goint to OOF zone. Maybe it is not so visible on such small pictures, but probably more on bigger prints. Isn't it? jaapv Posted January 15, 2010 Share #9 Posted January 15, 2010 Actually it is not a very difficult lens to focus. I prefer to have the largest part of DOF in front of the subject, as that promotes plasticity.

Logic108 Posted January 16, 2010 Share #16 Posted January 16, 2010 Actually this image was taken with the M8.2. I was testing for subject/background separation. I still don't understand the DOF issue with the 1.3 crop. It should be that the DOF is shallower on the M8 because the focal length is longer but some say that the DOF on the M9 is shallower. I'd love to hear which is true. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! vdb Posted January 16, 2010 Share #17 Posted January 16, 2010 My all time fav lens. Did not use i nearly as much with my M8....but stays on my M9 most of the time. rob_w Posted January 16, 2010 Share #18 Posted January 16, 2010 My compliments to all of the photographers who have posted work so far -- lovely examples of what this lens can do. And the more you're getting closer to the subjet the shallower gets the DOF (with both the same f-stop). -DeLosLindos
