JMacD Posted January 14, 2010 Share #1 Posted January 14, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Over on L-L we see some very nice photos taken with an M9 Flying With Camera Gear Post 25 Dec, 2009 Michael explains he limited himself to only 7 lenses, since he was flying "light" on this trip to the Canary Islands. Enough of reading about which one lens a photographer would take on a trip, or which two or three. I want to hear from you all on if you were limited to only seven lenses, which ones would you bring? Michael has beautiful photos posted that he shot with a Tri-Elmar at 35mm, a 90 Summicron, and a 135 APO-Telyt. Ah, but what were the other lenses he took? What would you take? Notice he took a different camera system for over 200mm. Yeah, this is another reason this site is divided between M8 and M9 as the list of lenses would be totally different. Also, I recall Michael sold his M8 at the right time, but clearly did not sell all his lenses. BTW his article was not about Leica but getting through airport security these days. yanidel Posted January 14, 2010 Share #3 Posted January 14, 2010 7 lenses for a M? Maybe on the shelves at home but for travel, never ever ! 3-4 max.
JMacD Posted January 14, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted January 14, 2010 Michael was kind enough to answer, and I quote: Leica M lenses are so small that there's no point in leaving any at home. Also they are almost all primes. For low light I had the the 24mm, 35mm, and 50mm f/1.4 Sumiluxes Longer lenses were the 90mm f/2 and 135mm f/3.5 I also had the f/4 28-35-50mm Tri-Elmar and the f/4 16-18-21mm WA Tri-Elmar for daytime walkaround use. Michael He has a good point. Remember, he did leave his P65 back home, and he only had one M9.
JTrunck Posted January 14, 2010 Share #5 Posted January 14, 2010 In addition to the three lenses you mention, my guess the other four are: WATE 35 Lux 50 Noct 50 Lux Of course you could email him and he would probably tell you, but guessing is fun too. Walt Calahan Posted January 15, 2010 Share #6 Posted January 15, 2010 If I owned an M9 I'd use the same three lenses I use with my two M6 TTL bodies: 24 mm, 35 mm, & 75 mm. If I had to choose just one lens it would be my 35 mm lux.
AlanJW Posted January 15, 2010 Share #7 Posted January 15, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Here are seven focal lengths that I sometimes carry (but more often leave the 25 or 35 home): WATE 16-18-21 25mm Zeiss 35mm Summicron 50mm Summilux 90mm Elmarit
ashwinrao1 Posted January 15, 2010 Share #8 Posted January 15, 2010 On a recent trip to Egypt, I carried, 6 focal lenghts... WATE 16-18-21 35 Lux 50 Lux 90 Cron I didn't use the WATE that much, but having the other 3 was brilliant...and probably all that I really needed, except if I wished to drop a wide shot in now and again.... LeicaS2 Posted January 15, 2010 Share #9 Posted January 15, 2010 Jim, you guessed best, except he had the 24lux rather than the noct.
Bo_Lorentzen Posted January 15, 2010 Share #10 Posted January 15, 2010 Hmm. maybe one day I will have 7 M lenses... I would travle with 50lux, cv15 and a 35lux maybe add the 75lux for a little more reach.. but I only have so many pockets. .
tgray Posted January 15, 2010 Share #11 Posted January 15, 2010 I can't think of 7 I'd want... I have travelled with up to 4, but that was only when I knew I'd be based around some hotel or something, and didn't carry all my lenses with me everyday. I typically only use 2 focal lengths on trips, but those two shift depending on what mood I'm feeling in. I don't try to get every shot out there, I just try and concentrate on the focal length that I'm using.

adan Posted January 15, 2010 Share #13 Posted January 15, 2010 Seven? I couldn't meet that quota. Core three lenses for intimate documentary photojournalism: 21, 35, 75. Nothing a 24, 28, 50 would add that that trio can't handle. For lighter more pocketable use I substitute a 90 Tele-Elmarit for the 75. If I need to go longer I add in the 135. For an example of the 21/35/75/135 foursome at work see: ColoradoSeen - Stories Index - 2010 Stock Show Other than that I have only the c/v 15mm - in a well-earned semi-retirement after doing yeoman work on the M8s. it may get a new lease on life for B&W, or if an M9 firmware upgrade improves the red edges. bill Posted January 15, 2010 Share #14 Posted January 15, 2010 I'm in the 2-3 lens camp for travelling - 4 at the outside. The last time I remember travelling "heavy" with Ms I took 2 bodies, 15, 35, 50x2 (Canon 1.2 and Elmar-M) 90 collapsible, 135. 2 on the bodies, 2 in the pockets, 2 in the bag. B2B coupling rings to keep things compact. Most of my shots were with the 2 50s... Regards, Bill
viramati Posted January 15, 2010 Share #15 Posted January 15, 2010 Not that I would carry 7 but all the same it is a amazing what you can carry in a small Billingham Hadley pro bag. I went way for a few days recently and took 90 elmarit 50 lux 35 cron 28 cron WATE and frankenfinder M9 M8.2 This all I would ever really need and I find I can carry it all all day with no particular problem. Most used lens's are the 50 and
erl Posted January 15, 2010 Share #16 Posted January 15, 2010 Taking nine lenses to the Antarctic on Sunday! 15cv; 24/2.8; 28/2.8; 35/2; 50/2; 50/1; 75/2; 90/2; 135/4. After the first few days I will hone it down to 3 or 4 on any given day, depending on location. I believe in the subject dictating my lenses, not an abacus. This is the one time I will have the luxury of not having to carry everything everywhere I go, so a bag with "the lot" to choose from is the go. luigi bertolotti Posted January 15, 2010 Share #20 Posted January 15, 2010 If I'm going to take 7 lenses with me... that's a set which surely includes Visoflex3 and one or two lenses for it (M8): 15 - 21(24) - 35 -50 -75 - 135 - 280(200)
